Surname
The name Bruegel, an acronym for Brussels European and Global Economic Laboratory , refers to the painter Pieter Bruegel , whose “ keen observation of the life of ordinary people and daily economic activity ” (German: “sharp observation of the life of ordinary people and everyday economic activities “) As well as the epoch in which he lived, the Renaissance , should serve as an inspiration for the activities of the organization.
history
The idea of founding this European think tank arose at the end of 2002 as part of private meetings between politicians, senior business leaders and other stakeholders. On January 22, 2003, the intention of a “European initiative with the aim of creating a European Center for International Economics” was recorded by Germany and France in the joint declaration on the 40th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty . A specially created project group subsequently developed a concept with the support of French and German ministries. In December 2004, the first board of directors was appointed by representatives of 12 European governments and 17 European or European corporations, and it was decided to finance the project with initially 5 million euros until 2006.
The organization was founded on August 10, 2004 as an international non-profit organization under Belgian law ( AISBL ), the first meeting of the Board of Directors followed on January 17, 2005. In October 2005, the first research program was decided.
From 2005 to 2008 Mario Monti was chairman of the board of directors. In June 2008 he was succeeded by Leszek Balcerowicz . Former ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet has headed the think tank since April 2012 . The French economist Jean Pisani-Ferry acted as director from its inception until April 2013; his successor is his former deputy, the German economist Guntram B. Wolff .
