The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) is a think tank under the administration and direction of South Korea . KIEP's headquarters are located in Seochu-gu district in Seoul , but there is also a branch in Beijing . Research focuses on the relationship between South Korea and the international economy. The institute is ranked among the 25 best think tanks in the International Economic Policy category of the University of Pennsylvania . KIEP is also a member of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences (NRCS), the central umbrella organization of South Korean research institutes.

history

KIEP was founded in 1990 on the initiative of the South Korean government and has since expanded several times. The Center for Regional Economic Studies (CRES), for example, was added in 1992, the Beijing branch in 1997. When Japan , South Korea and the People's Republic of China decided in 1999 to form a trilateral research group for joint research on economic cooperation, the KIEP was chosen for this purpose Side to represent. KIEP is led by a President whose position is currently held by Wook Chae. He is supported by a Vice President and the Planning and Research Department to manage the 160+ employees (including more than 50 doctoral research fellows).

The main function of the institute is to advise the South Korean government in all fields of international economic policy. In addition, KIEP also carries out research projects for external organizations upon request.

The research of the KIEP is essentially divided into five main divisions:

  • The Department of International Macroeconomics and Finance analyzes macroeconomic and financial issues and, in particular, their relevance for the South Korean economy.
  • The Department of Trade and Investment Policy's research focuses on matters relating to international organizations such as B. WTO or OECD related.
  • The Center for Regional Economic Studies (CRES) examines trends and developments in other countries and regions that are important to South Korea.
  • The Center for International Development Cooperation deals with issues of international development aid cooperation and Asian economic cooperation.
  • Research in support of South Korea's policymaking towards APEC is coordinated and conducted at the National Center for APEC Studies .

The Korea Economic Institute (KEI), based in Washington DC, is also affiliated with KIEP; KIEP is also responsible for the Asia Economic Panel (GSEC) together with the Earth Institute (EI) of Columbia University and Keio University's Global Security Research Center (GSEC) ( AEP).

Publications

The institute regularly publishes analyzes, working papers, monographs and journals, including the quarterly Journal of East Asian Economic Integration (JEAI).
