geography

Serrières-en-Chautagne is located at 267  m , near Seyssel , about 35 kilometers north of the prefecture of Chambéry and 22 kilometers west of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Chautagne, on the eastern edge of the wide Rhone Valley , at the western foot of the Montagne du Gros Foug.

The area of the 16.04 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Rhone Valley. The Rhone flows here in a wide valley from north to south, flanked to the west by the Jura range of the Grand Colombier and to the east by the range of the Montagne du Gros Foug . The western border runs in the area of the Rhone, which is dammed by a weir near Motz. Therefore, their water is divided into a canal and a wide oxbow river bed. From the course of the river, the community area extends eastward to the approximately 2 km wide, flat floodplain. The formerly swampy area ( Marais de Chautagne ) is now partially drained and made up of an extensive forest that has a rich flora and fauna. The communal soil extends over the initially gently and later steeply rising slope of Serrières to the densely wooded ridge of the Montagne du Gros Foug. Here, at 1057  m, the highest point in Serrières-en-Chautagne is reached.

In addition to the actual town center, Serrières-en-Chautagne also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Mathy ( 260  m ) on the eastern edge of the Rhone Valley
  • La Chêtraz ( 260  m ) on the eastern edge of the Rhone Valley
  • Chez Mottet ( 480  m ) on the western slope of the Montagne du Gros Foug
  • Chevignay ( 440  m ) on the western slope of the Montagne du Gros Foug
  • Vovray ( 550  m ) on the western slope of the Montagne du Gros Foug

history

The municipality of Serrières was already populated during Roman times. A dam along the Rhone dates from this period. The place name goes back to the Latin word serra , which means, among other things, lock , which probably means the protective dam on the Rhone. The village is first mentioned in 1198 under the name Serreries . The spelling developed over time to today's Serrières ( Parrochia Serriarum is passed down from 1510 ). It was not until 1898 that the municipality was given the name en-Chautagne to avoid confusion with other localities with the same name. The Serrières area belonged to the Lords of Chautagne in the 13th century, then to the Montluel family.
