La Biolle is a French commune with 2,578 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Chambéry and the canton of Aix-les-Bains-1 .

geography

La Biolle is located at 386  m , near Aix-les-Bains , about 21 kilometers north of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends in the foothills of the Alps in the southern Albanais , on a slope inclined slightly to the south in the valley that connects the Rumilly basin with the Lac du Bourget , at the eastern foot of the Montagne de la Biolle .

The area of the 13.04 km² municipal area covers a section of the French Alpine foothills. The southern border runs along the Deisse , which flows here in a wide valley from northeast to southwest and drains the area to Lac du Bourget . From the course of the river, the community area extends northward to the adjacent Molasse plateaus and into the valley of the Albenche (side stream of the Deisse). This part of the municipality with low relief is flanked in the west by the densely wooded steep slope of the Montagne de la Biolle . The western municipal boundary runs on the ridge of the Montagne de la Biolle, which separates the Lac du Bourget from the Albanais and geologically forms the southern continuation of the Montagne du Gros Foug . Here, at 854  m, the highest point of La Biolle is reached.

In addition to the actual town center, La Biolle also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Savigny ( 340  m ) at the foot of the Montagne de la Biolle
  • Roasson ( 400  m ) west of the village
  • Les Plagnes ( 420  m ) in the valley of the Ruisseau de Savigny at the foot of the Montagne de la Biolle
  • Villette ( 440  m ) in the Albenche valley at the eastern foot of the Montagne de la Biolle
  • Le Parc ( 435  m ) on the plateau north of the village

Neighboring municipalities of La Biolle are Albens in the north, Mognard in the east, Grésy-sur-Aix in the south and Brison-Saint-Innocent and Saint-Germain-la-Chambotte in the west.

history

The municipality of La Biolle was settled very early. Traces from the Neolithic were found in a cave near Savigny . Various remains (wall foundations, inscriptions) are also evidence of Roman times . The place name of La Biolle goes back to the Latin word betula (birch). In the Middle Ages the area belonged to the lords of Montfalcon . At the time of the first documented mention of their manor in 1268, these were already under the control of the Counts of Savoy . In the 16th century, when La Biolle was first mentioned in a document, Montfalcon rose to become a burgrave .

Attractions

The parish church was built in the 19th century. The Maison Calloud-Blanc with two towers dates from the 16th century and was remodeled in the 18th century. Ruins of the Montfalcon Castle have been preserved. There are several mansions in the municipality, namely the Château de Longefan (originally from the 15th century, modified in the 18th century) and the mansions of La Mollière and Roasson.

After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century, there has been a significant increase in population since the mid-1970s thanks to the beautiful residential area. The local residents of La Biolle are called Biollan (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, La Biolle was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are now various small and medium-sized businesses that have mainly settled along the main street. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Chambéry and Annecy area .

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the main road D1201, which, as the former national road N201, leads from Chambéry to Annecy. There are other road connections with Saint-Germain-la-Chambotte and Mognard. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 5 km away.
