École is a French commune with 291 inhabitants (1 January 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

École is located at 736  m , about 21 kilometers northeast of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, in the center of the Bauges massif , in the middle of a broad basin south of the Chéran , between the peaks of Grand Colombier in the west and Mont Trélod in the north-east.

The area of the 29.65 km² municipal area includes a heavily reliefed section of the Bauges massif. The central part is occupied by the valley basin of École, which extends in a north-south direction and has a flat valley floor a good 1 km wide. The Chéran flows into this basin from the east from the narrow Vallon de Bellevaux . Below École, it takes up the Ruisseau des Grands Prés from the south . To the west the basin is flanked by Mont Chardonnet ( 1405  m ); the community area extends to the summit of the Grand Colombier ( 2043  m ).

To the east, the municipality extends into the remote and deeply cut Vallon de Bellevaux, with the Chéran always marking the northern border. Two side valleys flow from the south, in the upper areas of which there are extensive alpine meadows. The southeastern border runs along the narrow ridge that forms the watershed between the Chéran and the adjacent Isèretal . Distinctive mountain peaks are the Dent d'Arclusaz ( 2040  m ), the Montagne de la Lanche ( 2060  m ) and the Mont Pécloz , on which the highest peak of École is reached at 2197  m . The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

In addition to the actual town center, École also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Le Villard ( 742  m ) in the valley basin south of the village
  • Gratteloup ( 750  m ) in the valley basin south of the village, on the Ruisseau des Grands Prés

Neighboring municipalities of École are La Compôte and Jarsy in the north, Montailleur and Grésy-sur-Isère in the east, Fréterive , Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny and Sainte-Reine in the south and Aillon-le-Jeune and Aillon-le-Vieux in the west .

history

École was first mentioned in a document at the end of the 11th century under the name Sc (h) ola . Later the names Eschola (1215) and Parrochia Scole (1432) appeared. In École there was a small rule in the Ancien Régime , which depended on the Marquisate Bauges. In the middle of the 11th century, the Bellevaux priory was founded in the remote valley of the same name east of École through a donation to the Benedictine monastery of St-Taurin de Gigny . The name appeared in the documents around 1090 as Bellævalles (beautiful valley). The monks made the area around the present-day village arable. In 1788 it was dissolved and the buildings fell into disrepair.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Maurice was built in the 18th century and has a Pietà from the 16th century. At the site of the former Bellevaux priory there is now a prayer chapel and a little above the Notre-Dame de Bellevaux chapel (also called Sainte-Fontaine), which is an important pilgrimage destination, especially on Whit Monday .
