location

The village lies on the banks of the Rhône on the slopes of the Montagne du Chat massif . topography

The Rhone Bridge at Lucey

The area of the municipal area of 6.14 km 2 covers a section of the left, eastern bank of the Rhone with the middle of the river as the municipality boundary. Here the Rhone forms a lowland several hundred meters wide , which is criss-crossed by meadows and wetlands. Next to it rises a ridge that forms an anticline in the southern French Jura and whose rise is divided into different areas. An approximately 150 m high, wooded steep slope is followed by a stepped terrain that flanks the ridge over a length of around 10 km and offers space for several of the hamlet settlements of Lucey. Behind it, the communal soil rises again up to the Mont Landard in the north and the Mont de la Charvaz in the south, the peaks of which, however, are already outside the municipal boundaries. At 660  m near Ontex in the foothills of the Mont de la Charvaz, the municipality floor reaches the highest point. In the area of the center of Lucey, the steep slope has a cut that allows road access to the higher-lying settlements and neighboring communities.

Community structure

The center of Lucey is in the lowlands of the Rhone in the area of a crossroads. The following hamlet settlements also belong to the municipality:

  • Vetrier ( 409  m ) on the step above the Rhone and below Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille,
  • Les Puthod , Montagnin and Crémon ( 330  m ) further south on the same step on the road from Lucey to Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille,
  • Vraisin ( 335  m ) in the very south of the municipality above the town center.

history

The Château de Lucey

As in Yenne and the places on the nearby Lac du Bourget , evidence of Gallo-Roman settlement also exists in Lucey . The parish of Lucey was first mentioned in the Middle Ages in 1274 as Ecclesia de Loyssey . Various other Latinized names have been documented from the following period, including Luceium (1581), Laicei (1690) and Luciacum (17th century). In the Middle Ages, the place was the seat of the Lords of Lucey, who were also responsible for the manorial seats in the neighboring communities, including Loisieux, Billième, Conjoux, Chanaz and Jongieux. With the elevation of the Lords of Lucey to castellans in 1563, the neighboring communities became a direct part of the lands of Lucey, which rose to Marquisate in 1654 .

Attractions

The Saint-Étienne church in Lucey

The Château de Lucey stands on a small hill above the village and dates back to a permanent house from the 13th century, the seat of the lords and later the Marquis of Lucey. It received its present form in the 19th century. The village church of Saint-Étienne also dates from the 19th century and replaced a previous building in the same place.

A 225 m long road bridge from 1938 crosses the Rhone. It is designed as an arch bridge, one of the arches was destroyed in 1940 and later rebuilt.

With 318 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Lucey is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 359 inhabitants), a significant increase in population has been recorded again since the 1970s. The local residents of Lucey are called Lucettois and Lucettoises in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Lucey was a village dominated by agriculture , especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. Today, viticulture is still particularly important as part of the Savoie wine-growing region ; the vineyards cover a large part of the terrain above the Rhone valley. The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white , rosé and red wines of various grape varieties . The place is also part of the stricter designation of origin Vin de Savoie Jongieux from the neighboring community of the same name. This applies to white wines with Jacquère as the main grape variety (at least 80% vines) and to red wine blends made from Gamay , Mondeuse and Pinot Noir .

In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, including those in the Ain department on the other side of the Rhone.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on the D921 department road, which connects the villages on the left bank of the Rhone in a north-south direction. Another road connection is via the Pont de Lucey with Massignieu-de-Rives in the Ain. From Lucey, the D210 opens up the municipalities of Ontex and Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille. There are connections to the regional and supraregional infrastructure via the greater Chambéry area around 25 km away with its Chambéry-Savoie airport , Chambéry-Challes-les-Eaux SNCF train station and connections to the A41 and A43 motorways .
