geography

location

Avressieux is located on the western edge of the department at 301  m , about 18 kilometers west of the prefecture of Chambéry , 70 kilometers east-southeast of the city of Lyon and 43 kilometers north of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). Neighboring municipalities of Avressieux are Rochefort in the north and east, Verel-de-Montbel and Belmont-Tramonet in the south and Saint-Genix-les-Villages with Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers in the north-west.

topography

The area of the 8.07 km 2 municipal area covers part of the Avant-Pays Savoyard , the Savoyard foreland characterized by gentle elevations between the border river Guiers and the southern end of the main anticlines of the Jura . The communal soil, with its light relief, reaches its highest elevation at 477  m on the northern edge and drops evenly to the southwest towards the Guiers valley. It is drained by several small streams that have sunk into the relief in small ravines. Narrow patches of forest flank these streams and make up around 16% of the municipal area. The rest of the undeveloped parish area is used for agriculture. Avressieux is a scattered settlement whose hamlets and farms are spread over the entire municipality.

history

The center of Avressieux

Already in the High Middle Ages there was a parish in Avressieux, which was first mentioned in 1115 as Ecclesia de Avriacu , and in 1120 as Ecclesia Sancti Laurentii de Avriciacu . The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman proper name Avritius .

Attractions

Château de Montfleury

The Château de Montfleury , east of the village center, was the seat of a small lordship in the Middle Ages and still has its original donjon from the 13th century. Further wings of the building from later centuries are attached to it and are closed by a hexagonal tower. Today it houses a local museum and can be visited.

After the population had steadily declined since the annexation of Savoy to France (699 inhabitants were counted in 1861), the trend reversed in the 1980s in favor of an increase in population. The locals of Avressieux are called Avarcholan (e) s or Apricien (ne) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Avressieux is still today an agricultural village whose farmers are mainly focused on milk production . There are also various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the neighboring departments.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Belmont-Tramonet. The next motorway connection to the A43 Lyon –Chambéry is four kilometers away at Saint-Genix. The airports in the region are Lyon-St-Exupéry (65 km away) and Chambéry-Savoie (32 km away).
