Jarsy in winter

Jarsy is a French municipality with 267 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Chambéry and the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse .

geography

Jarsy is located at 843  m , about 22 km northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 27 km south of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The mountain village extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, in the center of the Bauges massif , in a panoramic position on a terrace around 120 m above the Chéran valley floor , at the southern foot of Mont Trélod .

The area of the 32.68 km² municipal area includes a heavily reliefed section of the Bauges massif. The area takes up part of the headwaters of the Chéran, with the river always forming the southern border. The Chéran rises on the southern slopes of the Pointe de Chaurionde ( 2173  m , easternmost point), first flows through the Vallon de Bellevaux, which is cut deep into the mountains, and receives its inflow from various short streams from remote side valleys. At Jarsy, the Chéran enters the École basin. The Ruisseau de Chérel , whose catchment area belongs entirely to Jarsy, flows here from the northeast . To the north, the municipality extends over the Col de Chérel ( 1495  m ) into the Combe d'Ire valley . These valleys are dominated by the striking limestone peaks of Dent de Pleuven ( 1771  m ; Jarsy's local mountain), Mont Trélod ( 2181  m ), Mont de la Coche ( 2035  m ) and Pointe d'Arcalod (at 2217  m the highest elevation in Jarsy ). The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

In addition to the actual town center, Jarsy also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Etre ( 750  m ) in the Chéran valley basin
  • Belleville ( 800  m ) above the Ruisseau de Chérel at the foot of the Dent de Pleuven
  • Sur Roche ( 900  m ) on a ledge above the Chéran basin
  • Précherel ( 980  m ) in the valley of the Ruisseau de Chérel
  • Le Coudray ( 920  m ) on the slope above the village
  • Carlet ( 800  m ) on the Chéran, at the entrance to the Vallon de Bellevaux

Neighboring municipalities of Jarsy are Chevaline , Doussard , Giez and Faverges-Seythenex in the north, Plancherine , Verrens-Arvey and Tournon in the east, École in the south and La Compôte and Doucy-en-Bauges in the west.

The place name probably goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Gercius and means something like estate of Gercius . In the Middle Ages, the Hautecombe monastery owned rich land in the municipality.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from École, there are other local road links with Doucy-en-Bauges and La Compôte. The closest connection to the A43 motorway is around 22 km away.
