Challes-les-Eaux behind the airport of the same name

Challes-les-Eaux is a French municipality with 5590 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Chambéry and the canton of La Ravoire . The inhabitants are called Challésien (ne) s .

geography

Challes-les-Eaux is located at 308  m , about six kilometers east of the city center of Chambéry. The community extends on the southwest edge of the Bauges , a limestone massif in the northern French Prealps. The area of the 5.65 km² municipal area comprises a section of a flat alluvial plain that separates the two mountain ranges of Bauges and Chartreuse . This part is densely populated and, together with the neighboring communities, forms a continuous suburb of Chambéry. In the eastern part, the wooded steep flank of Mont Saint-Michel begins abruptly on the edge of the Bauges, where the municipal area extends to 565  m .

The residential area of Le Puits lies above the actual village and was an independent village at the time of the French monarchy . Challes-les-Eaux is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Barby in the north, Curienne in the east, Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré in the south, Myans in the south-west and La Ravoire in the north-west.

history

The community was called Triviers until 1872. Challes, whose name probably goes back to the late Latin casula , was a hamlet and mansion north of Triviers, but after the discovery of sulphurous thermal springs in 1841 it finally became the center of the community.

In the Middle Ages the parish belonged to the diocese of Grenoble and was first mentioned in 1110 as Trivers in its documents . In Challes, on the other hand, there was a small manor with a permanent house . As part of Savoy , the community came to France in 1860.

Economy and Infrastructure

After Challes-les-Eaux was dominated by agriculture well into the 20th century, it is only of secondary importance today. The municipality is predominantly a residential municipality whose employees work in the Chambéry area. It also has a number of small local businesses as well as some medium-sized businesses. One of the largest employers is a private hospital with 260 beds and around 100 doctors, which was created in 2009 by merging several clinics.

The former Route nationale 6 (now: Départementstraße 1006), the road connection between Chambéry and Modane , runs through the municipality . The two-lane city motorway from Chambéry, the still toll-free A43 in this area, with junctions a few kilometers away, runs on the western edge of the municipality . Part of the Chambéry-Challes-les-Eaux airfield, which opened in 1913, is located in the municipality. From there, glider pilots and small aircraft take off. The Chambery-Savoie passenger airport is 16 km away.
