Sonnaz is a French commune in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Sonnaz is located at 370  m , about 6 km north of the city of Chambéry (beeline). The village extends in the northwest of the Savoie department, in the foothills of the Alps, southeast of Lac du Bourget , on a ridge between the Chambéry valley and the Tillet basin, at the western foot of the Nivolet (part of the Bauges massif ).

The area of the 6.79 km² large municipality covers a section of the French Alpine foothills. The main part of the area is taken up by the heights of Sonnaz, a ridge that extends from Chambéry northwards to Aix-les-Bains . In the east this ridge is bounded by the approximately 1 km wide, flat valley plain of the Tillet , which formerly formed a swamp area. The community area extends in a narrow corner to the southeast and extends up the steep slope of the Bois du Fournet . On a ledge below the Nivolet, the highest point of Sonnaz is reached at 680  m .

In addition to the actual town center, Sonnaz also includes several hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:

  • Rages ( 320  m ) on the eastern slope of the Voglans hill
  • Montagny ( 290  m ) in the Tillet valley

Neighboring communities of Sonnaz are Viviers-du-Lac in the north, Méry and Verel-Pragondran in the east, Saint-Alban-Leysse and Chambéry in the south and Voglans in the west.

history

The municipality of Sonnaz was already settled during Roman times, which has been proven by several remains. In the Middle Ages the name Sonnas appears in the documents. Sonnaz belonged to the property of the Benedictine priory of Lémenc. For a long time it formed its own little rulership.

Attractions

The parish church of Sonnaz was built in the 19th century. The Château de Sonnaz originally dates from the 11th century, but was given its current appearance after extensive renovations in the 19th century. The grave of the young pop singer Grégory Lemarchal is in the small cemetery .

Some commercial zones have emerged along the main street in the last few decades. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry area.
