The Château de Mecoras north of Ruffieux

Ruffieux is a French municipality with 837 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Ruffieux is located at 296  m , near Culoz , about 31 kilometers north of the prefecture of Chambéry and 23 km west-southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Chautagne, on the eastern edge of the wide Rhone Valley and on the edge of the Marais de Chautagne , at the western foot of Mont Clergeon .

The area of the 13.21 km² municipality covers a section of the Rhone Valley. The western border is formed by the Rhone, which flows from north to south in a wide valley parallel to the Jura ranges . From the course of the river, the municipal area extends eastward over the 3 km wide, flat floodplain, which is occupied by the swamp and forest area of the Chautagne. This is followed by the initially gently rising slope of Ruffieux. This merges into the densely wooded steep slope of Mont Clergeon , which geologically represents the southern continuation of the anticline of the Montagne du Gros Foug . At 1021  m , Ruffieux's highest point is reached on the ridge of Mont Clergeon.

In addition to the actual town center, Ruffieux also includes several hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:

  • La Loi ( 240  m ) in the Rhone valley
  • Crozan ( 260  m ) on the eastern edge of the Rhone Valley
  • Saumont ( 250  m ) on the eastern edge of the Rhone Valley
  • Putignet ( 360  m ) on the lower western slope of Mont Clergeon
  • Collonges ( 360  m ) on the lower western slope of Mont Clergeon
  • Montagnet ( 430  m ) on the lower western slope of Mont Clergeon

Neighboring municipalities of Ruffieux are Serrières-en-Chautagne in the north, Moye in the east, Cessens , Chindrieux and Vions in the south and Culoz in the west.

history

The municipality of Ruffieux was settled very early. Remains from the Neolithic as well as Roman inscriptions and coins have been found. The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Ruffius and means something like Ruffius' estate ( Ruffiacum ). In the Middle Ages, Ruffieux was owned by the Montluel family, who lived in Châtillon Castle (on Lac du Bourget). In the 15th century it belonged to the Seyssel rulership.

Attractions

The parish church of Ruffieux was built in the 19th century. In the area of Ruffieux there are various castles and mansions, most of which date from the Middle Ages. These include the Château du Grand Mécoras (originally from the 14th century, later redesigned several times, today Monument historique ), the Château de La Roche (14th century), the Château de Collonges (19th century, now a hotel) and the Morand (14th century) and Saumont (16th century) mansions.
