Aillon-le-Vieux is a French municipality with 179 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Aillon-le-Vieux is located at 920  m , about 16 kilometers northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 28 kilometers south of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The mountain village extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, in the Bauges massif , on the eastern slope of the Ruisseau d'Aillon, at the foot of the Grand Colombier . It is located within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

The area of ​​the municipal area of ​​21.63 km² includes a section of the Bauges massif with a strong relief. The central part is occupied by a basin that is drained by the Ruisseau d'Aillon to the north to the Chéran . From a geological point of view, the Aillon valley forms a syncline . In the west, the valley is flanked by the densely wooded slope of Mont Margériaz (up to 1845  m ). The border runs on the narrow mountain ridge that runs northeast from the summit. To the east of the valley rises the Grand Colombier, on which the highest point of Aillon is reached at 2043  m , with its side mountains Dent de Rossanaz ( 1891  m ) and Rochers de la Bade ( 1843  m ). The mountain slope, which is criss-crossed by ledges, is divided by two erosion channels and the Combe du Cheval basin .

In addition to the actual town center, Aillon-le-Vieux also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

history

Aillon was first mentioned in a document in 1158 under the name de Allione . Later, the spellings Domus de Allionis (1178), Allonis (1223) and Prioratus de Ayllone (in the 14th century) appeared. The place name goes back to the personal names Allio , Allion or Allionis . In the remote valley east of Aillon-le-Jeune was 1184 at the instigation of Humbert III. from Savoy founded the Carthusian monastery Aillon. The monks made the valley arable, whereupon settlers from the surrounding areas settled. It was not until 1803 that the valley was divided into two parishes. This ultimately resulted in the split of the municipality of Aillon into the independent municipalities of Aillon-le-Vieux and Aillon-le-Jeune in 1863.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Donat was built in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style on the site of a previous building. Only the tower of the old church has been preserved. There is a chapel in the hamlet of Le Cimeteret.

With 179 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Aillon-le-Vieux is one of the smallest communities in the Savoie department. After the population fell sharply in the first half of the 20th century, it has remained fairly constant over the last few decades. The local residents of Aillon-le-Vieux are called Aillonnais (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Aillon-le-Vieux was primarily a village characterized by agriculture , especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Some employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. The village today also benefits from summer and winter tourism. Part of the Margériaz ski area with several mountain railways and ski lifts is located in the municipality of Aillon-le-Vieux.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Le Châtelard to Aillon-le-Jeune. The closest connection to the A43 motorway is around 27 km away.
