Puygros is a French municipality with 385 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Puygros is located at 760  m , about nine kilometers east of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in the west of the Savoie department, in the southern part of the Bauges massif , on a saddle east of the Chambéry valley, at the western foot of the Pointe de la Galoppaz.

The area of the 10.34 km² large municipal area includes a section of the solid mass of the Bauges. The central part of the area is taken up by the saddle of Puygros, the upstream forest height ( 840  m ) and the subsequent gently sloping slope. The western border runs along the Kerbtal of the Ruisseau de Ternèze , the northern along the valley cut of the Ruisseau de la Reysse , both side streams of the Leysse (tributary of the Lac du Bourget ), of whose valley Puygros in the extreme northwest has a share. To the east, the municipal area extends over the steep and wooded slopes and the Mont Céty ( 1426  m ) to the adjacent mountain ridge with the peaks Pic de la Sauge ( 1612  m ) and Pointe de la Galoppaz (at 1680  m the highest point in Puygros ). The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

In addition to the actual town center, Puygros also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Le Chêne ( 650  m )
  • Marle ( 700  m )
  • Fenestre ( 740  m )
  • Arvey ( 800  m )

Neighboring communities of Puygros are Saint-Jean-d'Arvey and Thoiry in the north, La Thuile in the east and south and Curienne in the west.

history

Puygros was first mentioned in a document in 1207 under the name Nantellum de Podio grosso . The spellings Puigros (1578) and Puisgros appeared later . The place name is made up of the words puy (height, hill) and gros (thick, wide). The area of Puygros formed a small dominion in the Middle Ages, which first belonged to a family of the same name. Later it was owned successively by different families, including the Amblard, La Balme and Seyssel families. At the time of the Ancien Régime, the rule was under the Marquisate of Chaffardon Castle.
