topography
The area of the 3.74 km 2 municipal area covers a section of the Avant-Pays Savoyard , the Savoyard foreland characterized by gentle elevations between the border river Guiers and the southern end of the main anticlines of the Jura . The eastern edge of the municipality is formed by an approximately 200 m rising land step running in north-south direction, which separates the valley floors of the Rhone and Guiers from the plateau that the Lac d'Aiguebelette occupies east of the municipality. The terrain is almost entirely characterized by vertically rising rock walls. The stream Tier marks the southern border of the community and drains towards the Guiers. The triangular-shaped municipal area rises from the animal to the terrain level over an irregular relief and is largely used for agriculture. Forests make up about 16% of the area.
Community structure
In addition to the actual town center, Verel-de-Montbel also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- L'Étang ( 407 m ) in the north,
- Bajat ( 331 m ) in the west.
history
The village and its parish were first mentioned in the High Middle Ages in 1142 as Ecclesia de Sancto Johanne de Verello . The addition "de Montbel" appeared in the 17th and 18th centuries as Verellum de Montebello , Verel-de-Mont-Bel and Verel Montbel en-Savoie . In the Middle Ages, under the sovereignty of Savoy-Piedmont and up to the French Revolution , Verel-de-Montbel was the center of a small dominion that included Verel, the neighboring villages of Dullin, La Bridoire and Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin . The lordship was elevated to a marquisate in 1654 .
Attractions
The village church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste dates from the 19th century. In the hamlet Bajat the typical for the Guiers Valley find Stampflehmhäuser . Natural attractions include the rock formations in the terrain between the Col de la Crusille and the Col du Blanchet , a nature reserve under the Natura 2000 network .

With 303 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Verel-de-Montbel is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined during the 19th and 20th centuries (in 1861 there were still 522 inhabitants), a significant increase in population has been recorded since around 1990. The local residents of Verel-de-Montbel are called Veroillot (e) s in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
Verel-de-Montbel is still a predominantly agricultural village that focuses on milk production . There are also a few small local businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the neighboring departments.
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares and is connected to the neighboring villages via secondary roads. A department road leads from Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin to Novalaise and climbs the terrain in several serpentines to the Col du Blanchet pass connection . The A43 divides the municipality into two halves and although it passes the village in the immediate vicinity, the next junction is around eight kilometers away at Belmont-Tramonet. The airports in the region are Lyon-St-Exupéry (distance 68 km) and Chambéry-Savoie (28 km).
