Arith and the hamlet of Montagny seen from the Montagne de Bange

Arith is a French municipality with 442 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Arith is located at 712  m , about 20 kilometers northeast of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The farming village extends to the northwest of the Savoie department, in the Bauges massif , on a terrace on the western edge of the wide valley basin of the Chéran , at the foot of the Montagne de Bange. It is located within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

The area of the 24.27 km² large municipal area includes a section of the solid mass of the Bauges. The eastern border is formed by the Ruisseau de Saint-François or, from its mouth, the Chéran. This crosses a valley widening here and enters the Cluse de Bange north of Arith , a characteristic clus with which it breaks through the edge chain of the Bauges. From the course of the river, the community area extends westward over the Arith terrace to the broad ridge of the Montagne de Bange . The predominantly wooded mountain ridge is karstified, so that no surface running water occurs because the rainwater seeps away immediately into the porous subsoil. At 1449  m , the highest point of Arith is reached at the height north of the Col de la Cochette .

In addition to the actual town center, Arith also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Bourchigny ( 740  m ) on the terrace of Arith, adjoining the village to the west
  • Montagny ( 800  m ) on the eastern slope of the Montagne de Bange

Neighboring municipalities of Arith are Cusy in the north, Allèves , Bellecombe-en-Bauges and Lescheraines in the east, Saint-François-de-Sales in the south and Saint-Offenge in the west.

history

The municipality of Arith was already settled during Roman times. Roman graves and coins were discovered. The place was first mentioned in a document in 879 under the name Villa Ariaco . The place name probably goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Ar (r) icus . In the 15th century belonged to Arith Kastlanei of Le Châtelard .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Laurent was built in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. There is a chapel in the hamlet of Montagny. The Grotte de Prérouge is a karst spring that flows directly into the Chéran at the foot of the Montagne de Bange.

With 442 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Arith is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population fell sharply in the first half of the 20th century, a slight population increase has been recorded again since the beginning of the 1980s thanks to the beautiful residential area. The locals of Arith are called Arithois (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Arith was a village dominated by agriculture , especially dairy farming and cattle breeding. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

Arith is off the main thoroughfares. Local road links exist with Cusy, Lescheraines and Saint-François-de-Sales. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 19 km away.
