Allèves is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

For the area of Allèves north of the Lac des Dix dam in Val d'Hérémence , Canton of Valais, Switzerland, see there.

geography

Allèves is located at 636  m , about 17 km south of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The mountain village extends on a south-facing slope in the French Prealps, in the Cluse de Bange, a gorge in which the Chéran breaks through the western edge of the Bauges massif .

The area of the 8.81 km² municipal area covers a section of the French pre-Alps. The southwest border runs along the Chéran. This breaks through the anticline of Semnoz in the north and Montagne de Bange in the south (edge chain of the Bauges) in a deeply carved characteristic gorge . The municipality occupies the northern slope of the valley of this Klus. It is characterized by striking limestone cliffs, some of which are over 100 m high. The Tours Saint-Jacques (rock towers) above the village have slipped off this rock face on a slide. On the Crêt de l'Aigle on the edge of the Semnoz plateau, the highest point in Allèves is reached at 1621  m .

Allèves includes the hamlet of Aiguebelette ( 625  m ) in the Cluse de Bange above the Pont de l'Abîme and a few individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of Allèves are Gruffy in the north, Leschaux and Bellecombe-en-Bauges in the east and Arith and Cusy in the south.

history

The municipality of Allèves was settled in prehistoric times. Remains from the Bronze Age have been found in the Grotte de Banges . Allèves is first mentioned in 1356 as de Allevis ; from 1696 the name Alevoz has been handed down. The place name probably goes back to the word alevier , the local name for the stone pine .

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Blaise was rebuilt in 1870 in the neo-Gothic style, with the old bell tower from 1635 being retained. Ruins of the Château du Cengle have been preserved.

With 411 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Allèves is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861, Allèves still had 433 inhabitants). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, a continuous increase in population has been recorded.

Economy and Infrastructure

Allèves was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Balmont to Lescheraines in the Bauges massif. Another road connection is with Cusy. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 13 km away.
