Sales is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Sales is located at 420 m , near Rumilly , about 13 kilometers west of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The former farming village extends in the foothills of the Alps on a hill east of the Chéran , in the wide hollow of the Albanais between the Montagne du Gros Foug in the west and the Semnoz in the east.
The area of the 9.21 km² municipal area includes a section of the Albanais. The northern border mostly runs along the winding course of the Fier , which flows here in a wide valley from east to west. From the Val de Fier, the municipality extends southwards over a gently undulating landscape to the Chéran. Overall, the area in the Rumilly basin shows only slight differences in relief. At 426 m , the highest point of Sales is reached east of the village.
In addition to the actual town center, Sales also include numerous hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- Le Pessey ( 370 m ) slightly elevated on the southern edge of the Fier valley
- Exuel ( 370 m ) slightly elevated on the southern edge of the Fier valley
- Faramaz ( 420 m ) on a terrace on the southern slope of the Fier; the eastern part of the hamlet belongs to Marcellaz-Albanais
- Germonex ( 383 m ) on the plateau south of the Fier
- Le Mollard ( 375 m ) on a knoll east of the confluence of the Chéran into the Fier
- Tigny ( 410 m ) on a hill north of the village
- Le Cruet ( 360 m ) in the Chéran valley
Neighboring municipalities of Sales are Vallières-sur-Fier and Hauteville-sur-Fier in the north, Marcellaz-Albanais in the east, Boussy in the south and Rumilly in the west.
history
The municipality of Sales was already settled during Roman times, which has been proven by several finds, including an inscription.
The place is first mentioned in a document in the 14th century.
Attractions
The three-aisled parish church of Saint-Pierre was rebuilt in 1964 in the historicizing Romanesque-Gothic style. There are several mansions in the Sales area, including the Château des Balmes (remodeled in the 19th century) and the former Château de l'Annonciade (built in 1667, now a farm).

With 1978 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Sales is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 743 inhabitants in Sales). Since the beginning of the 1960s, however, a significant increase in population has been recorded.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Sales was a predominantly agricultural village. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses. Otherwise the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Annecy area.
The village is off the main thoroughfares, close to the D16, which leads from Annecy to Rumilly. There are other road links with Hauteville-sur-Fier and Boussy. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 10 km away. Sales is connected to Rumilly train station by a bus line.
