The Fier [fje] is a mountain river in France that runs in the Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region . It rises in the municipality of Manigod , on the northern flank of Mont Charvin , a summit of the Chaîne des Aravis . It flows through the Manigod and Thônes valleys and breaks through the Défilé de Dingy gorge , near Dingy-Saint-Clair , a few kilometers east of the city of Annecy . From there, to the outskirts of Annecy, there is a whitewater trail that can be used by paddlers. A few kilometers to the west, near Annecy-le-Vieux , the river breaks through the (impassable) Gorges du Fier and after 72 kilometers it flows into the Rhone as a left tributary at Châteaufort , Motz municipality .
