Héry-sur-Alby is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Héry-sur-Alby is at 600  m , about 15 kilometers southwest of the city of Annecy (beeline). The farming village extends from a promising location in the foothills of the Alps west of the Semnoz , in the Albanais , on a slope sloping slightly to the east above the Chéran valley . The community is located within the Massif des Bauges Regional Nature Park .

The area of the 7.33 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Albanais. The eastern border runs along the Chéran, which is cut into a notched valley with several turns flowing from south to north. Along the course of the river there are partly vertically sloping rock walls. From the Chéran, the municipality extends westward over a relatively steep slope to the wide ridge of Héry, which separates the Chéran valley from the Albanais valley between Rumilly and Aix-les-Bains . On the summit, Héry-sur-Alby's highest point is reached at 702  m . The slopes are subdivided by the valleys of small side streams of the Chéran.

In addition to the actual town center, Héry-sur-Alby has several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Chez les Galme ( 600  m ) on the ridge of Héry
  • Les Plats ( 580  m ) on the upper western slope of the Chéran
  • Molna ( 500  m ) on a ledge above the Chéran

Neighboring municipalities of Héry-sur-Alby are Alby-sur-Chéran in the north, Mûres and Gruffy in the east, Cusy in the south and Chainaz-les-Frasses and Saint-Félix in the west.

history

Héry-sur-Alby was first mentioned in a document in the 9th century under the name Ariacum . The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman surname Arius and means something like Arius' estate. In 1860 Héry-sur-Alby was separated from the canton of Albens in the Savoie department and incorporated into the newly created canton of Alby-sur-Chéran in the Haute-Savoie department.

With 975 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Héry-sur-Alby is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 755 inhabitants in Héry-sur-Alby). Since the mid-1970s, however, thanks to the beautiful residential area, there has been a marked increase in population again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Héry-sur-Alby was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy and Chambéry area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a departmental road that runs from Rumilly to Lescheraines in the Bauges massif. There are other road connections with Saint-Félix and Chainaz-les-Frasses. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 3 km away.
