Saint-Sylvestre is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Saint-Sylvestre is located at 667 m , near Rumilly , about eleven kilometers southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The farming village extends from a panoramic location in the foothills of the Alps, in the Albanais , on a hill around 300 m above the Chéran valley floor .
The area of the 5.34 km² municipal area includes a section of the Albanais. The southern border runs along the Chéran, which flows here with several valley meanders from southeast to northwest. Over time, the river has sunk into the molasse layers in the area, so that it flows through a valley that is flanked on both sides by 5 to 50 m high rock walls. In the west and east, the municipality is bounded by two right side streams of the Chéran. The main part of the area is occupied by an elongated ridge in north-south direction, on which the highest point of Saint-Sylvestre is reached at 688 m . The ridge drops off relatively steeply to the south and east, while the western slope is significantly flatter.
In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Sylvestre has several hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- Le Pissieu ( 420 m ) in the valley of the Chéran at the southern foot of the hill of Saint-Sylvestre
- Marcellette ( 480 m ) on the western slope of the hill
- Vouchy ( 528 m ) on the western slope of the hill
- Champollier ( 550 m ) in a valley east of the hill
- Muret ( 595 m ) on the plateau north of the hill
- Le Gruy ( 630 m ) on the hill of Saint-Sylvestre
Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Sylvestre are Marcellaz-Albanais in the north, Chapeiry in the east, Alby-sur-Chéran and Marigny-Saint-Marcel in the south and Boussy in the west.
history
The hill of Saint-Sylvestre was already settled during Roman times.
Attractions
The village church on the hill was built in 1854 in the neo-Romanesque style on the site of a previous building; the bell tower dates from 1718. In 1878 the Notre-Dame-du-Perpétuel-Secours chapel was rebuilt. Of the secular buildings, the Château de Songy should be mentioned.

With 607 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Sylvestre is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were 606 inhabitants in Saint-Sylvestre). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, there has been a significant increase in population.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Sylvestre was predominantly an agricultural village. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy area.
The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. Local road links exist with Rumilly, Marcellaz-Albanais, Chapeiry and Alby-sur-Chéran. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 9 km away.
