Massingy is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Massingy is located at 537  m , near Rumilly , about 18 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The farming village extends in western Albanais , on a hill between the Albanais valley and the Nephe valley, east of the ridge of the Montagne du Gros Foug.

The area of the 12.34 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Albanais. The main part of the area is occupied by a hilly landscape (up to 640  m ), which is drained by several short streams north to the Nephe . The valley of the Nephe, which forms the northern and western border, separates this hill country from the ridge of Mont Clergeon , the southern continuation of the Montagne du Gros Foug. A small part of the community lies west of the Nephe on the slope of Mont Clergeon. Below the Col du Sapenay, the highest peak of Massingy is reached at 825  m .

In addition to the actual town center, Massingy also includes numerous hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Combachenet ( 440  m ) on the eastern slope of the Vergonne valley

With 875 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Massingy is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the population decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 997 inhabitants in Massingy). Since the beginning of the 1980s, however, there has been a significant increase in population.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Massingy was a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy area.

The village is located away from the larger thoroughfares. The main access is from Rumilly. Further road connections exist with Cessens, Bloye and Albens. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 10 km away.
