The area of the 13.91 km² municipal area includes a section of the Albanais. The central area is occupied by a high plateau ( 560  m ), which has boggy areas in various places. It is drained by several short streams west to the Chéran. To the east, the community area extends over an initially gently, later steeply ascending, densely wooded slope to the broad ridge of the Semnoz , which is part of the Bauges massif . On the lookout point of the Crêt du Châtillon , a hilltop covered by mountain pastures, the highest point of Viuz-la-Chiésaz is reached at 1699  m .

  • Lavy ( 540  m ) at the west foot of the Semnoz
  • La Chiésaz ( 554  m ) on the plateau at the west foot of the Semnoz
  • La Creva ( 600  m ) at the west foot of the Semnoz

history

The municipality of Viuz-la-Chiésaz was populated very early. Wall foundations of a villa have been preserved from Roman times ; the place was on the Roman road that led from Boutae (Annecy) to Aquae (Aix-les-Bains). A burial ground testifies to the Burgundian period.

The place was first mentioned in a document at the beginning of the 15th century. For a long time, the spelling Vieux-la-Chiésaz was used. Viuz is derived from the Latin word vicus (village, hamlet) or viculus (hamlet). The Cluniac priory of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was founded here in the 12th century, and in the 17th century it became the property of Talloires Abbey . It was overturned and destroyed during the French Revolution .

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Etienne was built in 1903 in the neo-Romanesque style. Only a baptismal font remains from the former priory. The medieval manor house of Barreau has been restored.

With 1324 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Viuz-la-Chiésaz is one of the smaller communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 Viuz-la-Chiésaz still had 646 inhabitants). Since the mid-1970s, however, thanks to the beautiful residential area and the proximity to Annecy, a marked increase in population has been recorded again.

Economy and Infrastructure

Viuz-la-Chiésaz was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy area.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Balmont to Lescheraines . There are other road connections with Alby-sur-Chéran, Mûres and Quintal. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 9 km away.
