Seynod is a commune Déléguée in the French town of Annecy with 21,213 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Seynod is located at 532  m , about 3.5 km southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The community extended on the southwestern edge of the Annecy basin in the foothills of the Alps at the foot of the Semnoz ( 1699  m ), on a left side stream of the Thiou (outflow of the Lac d'Annecy ), in the Genevois .

The area of the 19.17 km² former municipal area covers a section of the Annecy basin. The main settlement area lies in a gently undulating landscape, which is drained by two streams to the northeast to the Thiou. The community area extended to the south on the plateau at the west foot of the Semnoz and into the catchment area of the Chéran in the Albanais . A narrow tip reached across the steep slope to the broad, densely wooded ridge of the Semnoz, which belongs to the Bauges massif . Here, at 1024  m, the highest elevation in the municipality of Seynod was reached.

In addition to the actual town center, the municipality of Seynod also included various settlements and former hamlets, some of which have grown together today, namely:

  • Malaz ( 535  m ) on a knoll at the foot of the Semnoz
  • Sacconge ( 525  m ) in a valley at the foot of the Semnoz
  • Branchy ( 530  m ) on a plateau southwest of Seynod
  • Châteauvieux ( 580  m ) on the plateau at the foot of the Semnoz
  • Vieugy ( 600  m ) on the plateau at the west foot of the Semnoz
  • Bessonnet ( 605  m ) on the plateau at the west foot of the Semnoz
  • Le Treige ( 555  m ) on the plateau of the eastern Albanais
  • Mathonex ( 600  m ) on the plateau west of the Semnoz
  • Chez-Jacquet ( 550  m ) on the plateau of the eastern Albanais
  • Chaux ( 530  m ) in a hollow at the west foot of the Semnoz
  • Balmont ( 542  m ) in a valley at the western foot of the Semnoz

The neighboring communities of Seynod were Cran-Gevrier in the north, Annecy and Sévrier in the east, Quintal , Viuz-la-Chiésaz and Chapeiry in the south and Montagny-les-Lanches and Chavanod in the west.

history

A settlement under the name Saginatum already existed in the municipality of Seynod during Roman times . The place appears for the first time in the documents in the year 867 under the names Sagenadum and Sagenodum , when King Lothar of Lorraine gave the area to his wife Theutberga. From the 14th to the 16th century, Seynod formed its own small rule under the Pelard family. Territory changes occurred in the second half of the 20th century: in 1965, Vieugy was incorporated into Seynod, in 1973 Balmont entered into a merger with Seynod, which in 1997 resulted in the final merger or incorporation to Seynod.

The municipality of Seynod was incorporated into the city of Annecy on January 1, 2017. Seynod was the capital of the canton of Seynod in the Arrondissement of Annecy .

Attractions

The church of Seynod was built in the 19th century with the inclusion of the choir (17th century) of the previous building. The rectory dates from the 16th century. Vieugy has a neo-Gothic church (built in 1872), while the Balmont church was built in 1869. Of the secular buildings, the former castle Château-Vieux (built in the 13th century, now used as a farm) and the Château de Périaz (16th century, now also a farm) should be mentioned.

population

With 19,624 inhabitants most recently (as of January 1, 2013), Seynod was one of the largest municipalities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the middle of the 20th century, thanks to its proximity to Annecy, a marked increase in population has been recorded. The highest growth rates were recorded during the 1960s and 1970s. The northern part of the former municipality is largely built over today. In the meantime the settlement area of Seynod has merged seamlessly with that of Annecy and Cran-Gevrier. The parish was part of the Annecy agglomeration.

Economy and Infrastructure

Seynod was an agricultural village well into the 20th century. It was not until around 1950 that it began to develop rapidly into a residential suburb of Annecy and the industrial community of Cran-Gevrier. In the meantime, important companies in the automotive and food processing industries have settled in Seynod. There are also numerous other small to medium-sized companies, service companies, shops and trading companies. The industrial and commercial zones are located in the Loverchy area and along the main roads and the motorway.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. Seynod is on the main N201 road from Annecy to Chambéry . Another regional road connection is with Rumilly . The next connection to the A41 motorway , which crosses the municipality, is around 4 km away. Seynod is connected to Annecy by several bus routes. This means that Annecy Central Station on the railway line from Chambéry to Annemasse is easily accessible.

Town twinning

Seynod entered into a town partnership with Ineu (Romania) in 1999 and another in 2005 with Malgrat de Mar in Spain.
