from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Genevois is a former province of the Duchy of Savoy . Its capital was Annecy , other important places are Thônes , Faverges and La Clusaz . The Genevois bordered the provinces of Carouge in the northwest and Faucigny in the northeast and Savoy itself in the south.

Before the Genevois became the province of Savoy, it was the county of Geneva . And although the Counts of Geneva took their title after the city, they were never masters of the city of Geneva , which rather remained under the rule of the Prince-Bishop .

In 1394, after the death of Count Robert (who was Pope Clement VII in Avignon ), the county of Geneva passed to the family of the Lords of Thoire and Villars and was sold to the House of Savoy in 1400 , which in turn was sold several times as a paragium to the younger generation There were family members. In 1659 the county of Geneva or the Genevois was finally united with Savoy.
