Merl is the easternmost district of the city of Meckenheim in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Until the regional reform in 1969, Merl was an independent municipality. The district has about 5200 inhabitants.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1199 as Merlo . At that time, the Bonn Abbey of St. Cassius owned a farm here, around which people settled over the centuries, so that over time a village emerged. This historic village center is located north of today's Michaelskapelle , which is popularly known as "Merler Dom".

On August 1, 1969, Merl was incorporated into Meckenheim as part of the municipal reorganization of the Bonn area . As early as the early 1960s, planning began for the construction of a “new city” Meckenheim-Merl, which was to play a key role in coping with the pressure from the settlement in the then capital region of Bonn . To this end, an urban development measure was initiated, which was essentially implemented by the mid-1980s. In addition to numerous single-family houses and multi-storey residential complexes, an office and business center (“Neuer Markt”), a school center (1975–1978) and an indoor swimming pool (1977–1981) were built. A 25 meter wide avenue of plane trees (planted in 1976) serves as the access axis between the Neuer Markt and the center of Merl .

In 2001 the sculptor Beate Meffert-Schmengler from Meckenheim created the bronze fountain children with blackbird for the fountain on the Merler village square. A girl is sitting with bent legs and a boy is facing him, because he is watching the blackbird that has settled on one knee of the girl. The blackbird is an allusion to the name Merl (e) = Rhenish and French for 'blackbird'.

Infrastructure

BKA location Meckenheim

In the east the place borders directly on the federal highway 565 , which has its own exit Meckenheim-Merl ; In the south-east lies the federal highway 61 . An agriculturally used area in this direction called Merler Keil has been converted into a residential area since the end of 2005 after long-term discussions in the population and political bodies.

Merl has a Catholic ( St. Michael ) and a Protestant (Die Arche) church center, a Catholic elementary school and a community elementary school , but after the dissolution of the DRK Federal School (demolition of the building in 2007) no further educational institutions.

In addition to Wiesbaden (headquarters) and Berlin , the Federal Criminal Police Office has one of its offices in Merl . In 2005 the then Interior Minister Otto Schily wanted to close the Meckenheim office. After several demonstrations, the location was retained.

The Meckenheim treatment center, a branch of the LVR Clinic Bonn , was opened on February 1, 2004 . It consists of an outpatient clinic with a capacity of 450 "notes" per year, a day clinic with 18 treatment places and an open treatment station with 18 beds. It treats patients with psychotic disorders, depression and manias, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, personality and eating disorders. People with addiction disorders or mild to moderate dementia can also find care here.

Since October 15, 2007, the headquarters of BWI Informationstechnik has been located in Merl on the site of the former DRK federal school.

The local sports club is Rot-Weiß Merl . In addition to football and handball, the club also offers “Le Parkour” and back exercises in the popular sport category. The sports facility on Steinbüchel - between Gudenauer Allee and Zypressenweg - which had been in use for many years, had to be abandoned and relocated. (The Tennenplatz was laid out in 1971 and the natural grass pitch in 1976).

The relocation of the sports facility became necessary due to the establishment of a previously missing generously dimensioned local supply and the construction of further residential buildings including traffic infrastructure ( roundabouts , access roads, parking areas). The new "Alfred Engel Sports Facility", now with artificial turf and clubhouse, has been located opposite the Federal Criminal Police Office on Gerhard-Boeden-Strasse since 2012. There also has been bowling alley (Boulodrome) moved that the city had created in 1992 next to the old threshing floor space on the Steinbuechel. It is used by the 1.
