The BWI GmbH is a 100 percent state-owned company. history

BWI GmbH emerged on August 1st, 2017 from the merger of BWI Informationstechnik GmbH and BWI Systeme GmbH . The two predecessor companies were founded in 2006 by the Bundeswehr, IBM and Siemens . Together with BWI Services GmbH, they formed the BWI service network for the implementation of HERKULES , the largest public-private partnership in Europe. With the signing of the contract in December 2006, the service group received the order to modernize and manage the Bundeswehr IT. HERCULES ended on December 27, 2016.

On December 28, 2016, the Bundeswehr and BWI signed a contract for IT services for the Bundeswehr in Meckenheim. The BWI develops and operates the IT infrastructure of the Bundeswehr on the basis of an open-ended service contract and also makes its services available to other federal departments.

Tasks of the BWI service network until 2016

From 2007, BWI created a uniform IT landscape for the logistical and administrative processes within the Bundeswehr. This included setting up and managing a modern IT infrastructure and modernizing the data centers. At the same time, the SAP solution SASPF was integrated . The service group undertook the rollout for 50,000 users and the operation of the solution. In addition, there was user training and the training of service personnel to ensure continuous operation.

BWI services since 2017

BWI looks after around 1,200 Bundeswehr properties in Germany and is also represented nationwide with its own operating locations. BWI operates five data centers in Strausberg , Wilhelmshaven , Bonn , Cologne and Biere near Magdeburg , three technician locations in Bogen , Dresden and Germersheim , 25 service centers (SC) throughout Germany, ten locations of the information service and mediation service (A&V service), four User Help Desks (UHD) in Berlin , Hanover , Meckenheim and Munich and three operational competence centers (BKZ) in Bonn, Munich and Rheinbach . With the service contract signed on December 28, 2016, the BWI continues to be charged with the operation and further development of the information and communication technology of the Bundeswehr. In addition, one of the tasks of the BWI is to further develop the IT infrastructure of the Bundeswehr, for example by implementing a Bundeswehr cloud . Another digitization project of the BWI is the digitization of the health care of the Bundeswehr. Here the BWI, together with the Bundeswehr, creates the basis for the introduction of a digital health and patient record . In the field of military IT, the BWI supports the Bundeswehr with the development and operation of IT services for the digitization of land-based operations (D-LBO), for example for a battle management system.

Another field of activity of the BWI is the further development of the Bundeswehr's IT system. For this purpose, the BWI operates its own innovation management. This is responsible for transferring ideas and concepts into implementation projects that find their way into the BWI portfolio. In addition, the Cyber ​​Innovation Hub of the Bundeswehr (CIHBw), which previously successfully completed a three-year pilot phase, has been established as a department of the BWI since January 1, 2020 . It acts as an interface between the start-up scene and the armed forces and has the task of promoting digital innovations for the armed forces. The CIHBw identifies innovative technologies in the international start-up scene and develops and validates them for the Bundeswehr.

Awards

  • In 2018, the BWI received the eGovernment Award in platinum as the winner in the "IT service providers and data centers" category. In 2019 she was awarded the eGovernment Award in gold in the same category.
  • In 2019 and 2020, BWI was selected among the top 100 most innovative medium- sized companies in Germany for its innovation management under the mentorship of Ranga Yogeshwar .
  • BWI's company pension scheme was awarded the German company pension scheme in 2020.

Since December 28, 2016, BWI has been a 100 percent company of the Federal Republic of Germany and thus an in-house company of the federal government. From December 28, 2006 to December 27, 2016, the following shareholders were involved in the predecessor company BWI Informationstechnik GmbH: Siemens AG with 50.05%, the Federal Republic of Germany with 49.9% and IBM Germany with 0.05%.
