Cran-Gevrier is a commune Déléguée in the French town of Annecy with 18.264 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Cran-Gevrier was 427 m , about 2.5 km west of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The municipality extends in the basin of Annecy in the foothills of the Alps, at the mouth of the Thiou (outflow of Lac d'Annecy ) in the Fier , in the Genevois .
The area of 4.80 km² large municipal area included a section of the Annecy basin. The settlement area occupies the valley level of the Fier and the south adjoining ridge of Gevrier, which is around 80 m higher than the valley level. The community area was bounded in the north and north-west by the Fier, which cuts into the plateaus below Cran-Gevrier and has several meanders in the valley. From the Fier the parish extended eastward over the alluvial plain to the adjacent high terrace ( 450 m ) of Annecy and southward over the Thiou to the ridge of Gevrier. Here the highest point of Cran-Gevrier was reached with 528 m .
The community consisted of the districts of Cran ( 427 m ) at the confluence of the Thiou and Fier and Gevrier ( 516 m ) on a hill south of the valley. Neighboring communities of Cran-Gevrier were Meythet in the north, Annecy in the east, Seynod in the south and Chavanod and Poisy in the west.
history
The municipality of Cran-Gevrier was already populated during Roman times. The remains of a Roman villa have been found on the hill of Gevrier. Gevrier is the older of the two places. Its name goes back either to the Gallo-Roman personal name Grabriaccus or to the word guivre (mythical snake whose job it was to guard treasures; this snake also appears as a heraldic animal). Also Cran , two meanings are assigned, on the one hand incision, notch , on the other hand between two waters , wherein Thiou and Fier were meant.
The Château d'Aléry was built in the Middle Ages, making Cran the center of a small lordship. In the course of the 18th century, various workshops that were dependent on water power were set up in Cran. The former hamlet became the first major industrial site in the Annecy region. In the 19th century, Cran was the location of a flour mill, a paper mill, a textile factory and various blacksmiths and sawmills.
In 1902 the industrial site of Cran and the hamlet of Gevrier, previously an independent municipality, merged to form the municipality of Cran-Gevrier. The 20th century was marked by strong growth and the development of the suburb of Annecy. The municipality of Cran-Gevrier was incorporated into Annecy on January 1st, 2017.
Attractions
The church of Cran-Gevrier dates from the 19th century. A chapel originally dating back to the 13th century has been preserved in Gevrier.

With 17,493 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013), Cran-Gevrier was one of the largest municipalities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the first half of the 20th century, thanks to its proximity to Annecy, there has been a marked increase in population. The highest growth rates were recorded during the 1960s and 1970s. The valley level of Fier and Thiou as well as the hill of Gevrier were largely built over, so that there is no longer a separation between Cran and Gevrier. The former municipal area is almost completely taken up by settlement, commercial, industrial and traffic areas, whereby the development in some places is relatively loose and can still be significantly compressed. Today the settlement area of Cran-Gevrier has merged seamlessly with that of Annecy, Seynod and Meythet. The parish was part of the Annecy agglomeration.
Economy and Infrastructure
Cran-Gevrier developed into an industrial location as early as the early 19th century. The former branches of industry have now changed. The most important companies today include Rhenalu (aluminum processing; originated from the former Forges de Cran), Papeteries de Cran (paper industry) and Reboul SMT (cosmetics). There are also numerous other small to medium-sized companies, service companies, shops and trading companies. The industrial and commercial zones are located in the valley floor east of the Fier. The La Turbine cultural center, which was inaugurated in 2004, is located in Cran-Gevrier.
The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. Cran is on the old main road N508, which leads from Annecy to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine . Today Cran is relieved of through traffic by a bypass. For this purpose, the southern quarters and Gevrier will be cut by the motorway and feeder roads. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 2 km away. Cran-Gevrier is connected to Annecy by several bus routes. This means that Annecy Central Station on the railway line from Chambéry to Annemasse is easily accessible.
