Meythet is a commune Déléguée in the French town of Annecy with 8,424 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Meythet lies at 446  m , about three kilometers northwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The community extended in the Annecy basin in the Alpine foothills, north of the mouth of the Thiou (outflow of Lac d'Annecy ) in the Fier , in the Genevois .

The area of the 3.24 km² former municipality covers a section of the Annecy basin. The settlement area occupies the valley level of the Fier and the high terrace of Meythet, which is around 20 m above the valley level. The municipal area was bounded in the east and south by the Fier, which cuts into the plateaus below Meythet like a gorge, and in the west by the Nant de Gillon brook . At 460  m , the highest point in the municipality is reached at the airport on the plateau north of Meythet.

Neighboring municipalities of Meythet were Metz-Tessy in the north, Annecy-le-Vieux and Annecy in the east, Cran-Gevrier in the south and Poisy and Épagny in the west.

history

The municipality of Meythet was already populated in prehistoric times and during Roman times. The place was first mentioned in the 13th century under the name Meythez , and the spelling Meithet was used until the 18th century . The origin of the place name is not clearly established. One source derives the community name from the Latin word messis ( harvest ; because of the fertile soil in the area of the village), the other from mansus (meaning house or field ).

The municipality of Meythet was incorporated into the city of Annecy on January 1st, 2017.

With 8,368 inhabitants last (as of January 1, 2013), Meythet was one of the larger municipalities in the Haute-Savoie department. Since the early 1960s, thanks to the proximity to Annecy, a marked increase in population has been recorded. The highest growth rates were recorded during the 1970s. The entire plateau was built over quickly, so that the land reserves quickly melted away, which is why there have been only slight fluctuations since the beginning of the 1980s. Only in the last few years has the number of inhabitants increased again. The settlement area has now seamlessly merged with that of Annecy and Cran-Gevrier. The parish was part of the Annecy agglomeration.

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Meythet was predominantly an agricultural village. In the course of the 20th century, it developed rapidly into an industrial community (textile industry and metal processing). An extensive industrial and commercial zone has developed in the Fier valley floor in recent decades. Service companies, shops and trading companies settled here.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the old main road N508 that leads from Annecy to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine . Today Meythet is relieved of through traffic by a bypass. Further road connections exist with Poisy and Metz-Tessy. The nearest connection to the A41 motorway , which crosses and cuts through the municipality, is around 3 km away. During the Second World War, the Annecy-Meythet airport was built north of the village.
