geography
Épagny is located at 455 m , about 5 km northwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in the basin of Annecy in the foothills of the Alps, in a broad valley that is drained by the Nant de Gillon to the Fier , at the southern foot of the Montagne de Mandallaz, in the Genevois .
In addition to the actual town center, Épagny also included various former hamlet settlements, which were expanded by numerous new buildings, namely:
- Gillon ( 452 m ) on the Nant de Gillon in the Épagny plain
- Saint-Paul ( 458 m ) on the northern edge of the Épagny plain
- Chez Pinget ( 500 m ) slightly elevated on the northern edge of the Épagny plain
- Chez les Favres ( 706 m ) on a ledge on the southeast slope of the Montagne de Mandallaz
Neighboring towns of Épagny are Pringy in the north, Metz-Tessy in the east, Meythet in the south and Poisy , Sillingy and La Balme-de-Sillingy in the west.
history
Épagny is first mentioned in the documents in the 14th century. The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Hispanius or Spanius and means something like estate of Hispanius .

Since the early 1960s, thanks to the proximity to Annecy, a marked increase in population has been recorded. Over the past four decades the population has increased almost tenfold. Outside the old town center and along the main road, extensive residential and commercial areas were built. Today, the settlement area has almost completely merged with that of Metz-Tessy and Meythet.
Economy and Infrastructure
For a long time, Épagny was a predominantly agricultural village. During the second half of the 20th century, Annecy rapidly developed into a suburban and industrial community. Extensive industrial and commercial zones were created along the main road N508. Service companies, shops, trading companies and companies in the automotive industry settled here.
The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is close to the main road N508 which runs from Annecy to Bellegarde-sur-Valserine . More road links with Annecy-le-Vieux and Poisy. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 3 km away.
