Marigny-Saint-Marcel is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .
geography
Marigny-Saint-Marcel is located at 410 m , near Rumilly , about 14 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The former farming village extends in the Albanais , in the foothills of the Alps, on the southern edge of the Rumilly basin.
The area of the 7.35 km² municipal area includes a section of the Albanais. The northern and northeastern border runs along the Chéran , which flows here with several valley meanders from southeast to northwest. In the course of time, the Chéran has sunk into the molasse layers of the area, so that it flows through a valley that is flanked on both sides by 5 to 50 m high rock walls. Below Saint-Marcel, the river flows into the Rumilly basin. From the course of the river, the community area extends south to the adjacent hills, the highest elevation of which is 504 m . In the far west, Marigny-Saint-Marcel has a share in the approximately 2 km wide valley basin that continues from Rumilly southwards into the Aix-les-Bains area .
Several villages, hamlet settlements and farms belong to Marigny-Saint-Marcel, namely:
- Saint-Marcel ( 372 m ) on the southern edge of the Rumilly basin
- Marigny ( 410 m ) in a side valley of the Dadon
- Les Cornes ( 360 m ) in the Rumilly basin
- Vaudry ( 421 m ) on a hill east of the valley basin
- Vieux Marigny ( 415 m ) in a side valley of the Dadon
- Vons ( 450 m ) on a hill above the Chéran valley
Neighboring municipalities of Marigny-Saint-Marcel are Boussy in the north, Saint-Sylvestre in the east, Alby-sur-Chéran and Saint-Félix in the south and Bloye and Rumilly in the west.
history
The municipality of Marigny-Saint-Marcel was already populated during Roman times. Remains of thermal baths, inscriptions and Roman coins have been found. Marigny and Saint-Marcel are first mentioned in documents in the early 15th century. The place name Marigny goes back to the Gallo-Roman surname Marinius and means estate of Marinius ( Mariniacum ). In 1845 the two previously independent parishes merged to form today's double parish.
Attractions
The parish church of Saint-Benoît in Marigny was built in 1856. In Saint-Marcel there is a castle that was built at the beginning of the 18th century; the castle chapel has beautiful wall paintings. There are two other mansions in Bel-Air and Vons.

With 685 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Marigny-Saint-Marcel is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 618 inhabitants in Marigny-Saint-Marcel). Since the beginning of the 1970s, however, there has been a significant increase in population that has since declined.
Economy and Infrastructure
Marigny-Saint-Marcel was a predominantly agricultural village well into the 20th century . In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy area.
The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on a department road that leads from Rumilly to Alby-sur-Chéran. The main access is from Rumilly. Other road links exist with Bloye and Saint-Félix. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 3 km away.
Town twinning
An unofficial partnership has existed between Marigny-Saint-Marcel and the Sindeldorf district ( Baden-Württemberg ) of the municipality of Schöntal since 1959. This was initiated by Willy Humm from Sindeldorf, who worked as a prisoner of war on a farm in Marigny in 1946. A street in Marigny was named after Willy Humm on the 50th anniversary of the partnership. Another street in Marigny is called "Avenue de Sindeldorf".
