Barberaz is a French municipality with 4717 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Chambéry and the canton of La Ravoire . The inhabitants are called Barberazien (ne) s .

geography

Barberaz is located 285  m above sea level , about three kilometers east of the city center of Chambéry. The community extends on the northern edge of the Chartreuse , a limestone massif in the northern French Prealps. The area of ​​the 3.79 km² municipal area comprises a section of a flat alluvial plain formed by the Leysse and its left tributary Albanne . The Leysse forms the northern boundary of the municipality. This part is densely populated and, together with the neighboring communities, forms a continuous suburb of Chambéry. The southern part extends to the gently rising foothills of the Chartreuse, where the municipal area is up to 720 m above sea level. M. is enough.

The two hamlets of Chanaz ( 450  m above sea level) and La Lésine ( 450  m above sea level) on the heights above the Albanne plain belong to Barberaz . The district in the plain between the two rivers is called la Madeleine . Barberaz is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bassens in the north, Saint-Alban-Leysse in the north-east, La Ravoire in the east and north-east, Saint-Baldoph in the south and south-east, Montagnole in the south-west, Jacob-Bellecombette in the west and Chambéry in the west and north-west.

history

The place is mentioned for the first time around 1100 as Barbaraticum and Barbariacum in the documents, and goes back to the name Barbarus, which was common in Roman times for people without a Greco-Roman education . The place first developed on the slope above the impassable swampy plain near la Madeleine. In the years 1855–1860, today's parish church was built as a replacement for a dilapidated previous building that had become too small. The alluvial plain was built on with single-family houses in the 20th century.

With 4717 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Barberaz is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Savoie department. After the population fell sharply in the first half of the 20th century, a significant increase in population has been recorded since the early 1980s thanks to the beautiful residential area.

Economy and Infrastructure

Today, Barberaz is mainly a residential community whose employees are commuters who do their work mainly in the Chambéry area. In addition, there are a number of small and very small businesses active, including around 10 farmers who produce milk, fruit and meat on the slopes above the village.

The two-lane city motorway of Chambéry runs through the village, which merges from the N201 into the A43 motorway at the eastern edge of the municipality . There are two junctions on the less than one kilometer long section, the D1006 department road begins at the western end , the country road connection with Modane and the former N6 , while the eastern one provides access to the neighboring town of La Ravoire. The Culoz – Modane railway also crosses the municipality parallel to the N201, so that the different parts of the village are only connected by underpasses.
