Saint-Cassin is a French municipality with 838 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

location

Saint-Cassin is located at 498  m , a few kilometers southwest of the prefecture of Chambéry , 41 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Grenoble and 44 kilometers south-southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends on the northern edge of the Chartreuse , a limestone massif in the northern French Prealps. Neighboring municipalities of Montagnole are Cognin in the north, Montagnole in the east, Apremont (point of contact) and Entremont-le-Vieux in the south, Saint-Thibaud-de-Couz in the southwest and Vimines in the west.

topography

Pellat, Outheran and Corbeley on the southern edge of Saint-Cassin

The area of the municipal area of 14.79 km 2 is divided into two parts: the gently sloping foothills of the Chartreuse in the north-east including the settlement area of Saint-Cassin and a difficult-to-access southern part, characterized by steep wooded slopes. The municipality is therefore within the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional de la Chartreuse ). Its southern edge is marked by the almost vertically rising rock walls of the 1486  m high Pointe de la Gorgeat and the 1443  m high Mont Pellat . To the west of this, the municipality reaches its highest point at 1540  m on the northern flank of Mont Outheran . Another peak rises to the west, the 1419  m high Le Corbelet , from which the terrain drops steeply to around 400  m into the Vallée de Couz . In this valley, the Hyère river flows from the Chartreuse in a northerly direction and in parts forms the municipal boundary. Several streams run through the municipality in the east and drain it to the Hyère. By far the largest part of the community area with around 80% is taken up by forests, the rest is mainly covered by meadows or used for agriculture.

Community structure

In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Cassin also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • La Tiollière (approx. 350  m ) on the road and railway line through the Hyère Valley,
  • Les Alberges ( 390  m ) on the northeastern edge of the municipality,
  • La Combe ( 630  m ) on a plateau on the north slope of Le Corbelet .

history

Finds of Gallo-Roman coins and tombs indicate an early settlement of the municipality. The origins of Saint-Cassin can be traced back to the High Middle Ages , when the place was first mentioned in 1016 as Castrum Beati Cassiani . Around 1100, a parish of Sancti Cassiani also appears , for which John the Baptist is named as the patron saint from 1458 ( Ecclesia parrochialis Sancti Johannis de Capela Sancti Cassini nuncupata ). In the Middle Ages, the lands of Saint-Cassin changed hands several times under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy . The small lordship was secured by the castle mentioned in 1016 on a hilltop 729  m high, from which the Hyère valley could be seen all the way to Chambéry. Left to decay since the 16th century, its remains are now known as Tours de Saint-Claude . In the middle ages there were several fortress houses and mansions in the town center. As part of the Duchy of Savoy-Piedmont, Saint-Cassin rose to become a county ( comté ) in 1681 .

The village church of Saint-Cassin was built in the 19th century and replaced a previous building that stood on the area of the current cemetery. The building for the municipal administration ( mairie ) with an attached village school was built in 1866 and rebuilt in 1906. A waterfall falls from a rock face west of the hamlet of La Combe into the Hyère, the Cascade de Couz .

With 838 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Cassin is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population had declined evenly in the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century (618 inhabitants were still counted in 1861), the population increased again in the 1970s, due to the growth in the greater Chambéry area. Numerous new single-family houses were built scattered across the municipality. The local residents of Saint-Cassin are called Saint-Cassinois (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Cassin was a predominantly agricultural village. Several larger farms are still active today, primarily in the milk production sector . There are also some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many people in employment are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Chambéry area.

The village is not directly on a major thoroughfare, but benefits from the transport infrastructure in the nearby Chambéry. Through the valley of Hyère on the western outskirts of the village leading railway Saint-André-le-Gaz-Chambery and the secondary road D1006 (former N6 ), which Chambery with the Savoyard foothills ( Avant-Pays Savoyard ) and the towns in the lower Isère -Tal connects. Access roads lead from here and from the neighboring villages of Jacob-Bellecombette and Montagnole into the center of Saint-Cassin. The nearest regional train station and connections to the motorway network are in Chambéry. Airports in the region include Chambéry-Savoie (15 km away), Lyon-St-Exupéry (90 km) or Geneva (94 km).

There is a state elementary school ( école élémentaire ) in Saint-Cassin .
