Aillon-le-Jeune is a French municipality with 434 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Aillon-le-Jeune is located at 880  m , about 14 km northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 31 km south of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The mountain village extends to the north-west of the Savoie department, in the Bauges massif , in a basin of the Ruisseau d'Aillon, between Mont Margériaz in the west and Grand Colombier in the east. It is located within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

The area of ​​the 34.09 km² municipal area includes a section of the Bauges massif with a strong relief. The central part is occupied by the valley basin of the Vallée d'Aillon , which is drained by the Ruisseau d'Aillon to the north to the Chéran . From a geological point of view, the Aillon valley forms a syncline . To the west, the valley basin is flanked by the heights of Pointe des Torchets ( 1469  m ), Mont de la Croix ( 1614  m ) and Mont Margériaz ( 1845  m ). The slopes are densely forested, while large alpine meadows stretch out on Mont Margériaz. To the south, the community area extends to the Col des Prés ( 1135  m ), which connects to Chambéry.

The eastern part of the municipality includes the headwaters of the Ruisseau d'Aillon. It represents a closed valley depression oriented almost in a north-south direction, which is bounded by two parallel mountain ridges. In the valley, the Lindar coming from the south and the Lourdens coming from the north unite to form the Aillon , which flows through a gorge to the west into the Aillon-le-Jeune basin. The western of the two mountain ranges extends from the Pointe de la Galoppaz ( 1680  m ) over the Mont de la Buffaz ( 1660  m ) and the Rochers de la Bade ( 1843  m ) to the Grand Colombier, on which at 2043  m the highest point from Aillon-le-Jeune. The eastern chain and at the same time the eastern border of the municipality is formed by Mont Charvet ( 1572  m ), Mont Pelat ( 1543  m ) and Mont Chardonnet ( 1405  m ).

In addition to the actual town center, Aillon-le-Jeune also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • La Correrie ( 950  m ) in the valley of the Lourdens
  • La Manse or La Mense ( 1000  m ), a chalet area at the southern foot of the Rochers de la Bade

Neighboring municipalities of Aillon-le-Jeune are Aillon-le-Vieux and École in the north, Sainte-Reine and Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte in the east, La Thuile in the south and Thoiry and Les Déserts in the west.

history

Aillon was first mentioned in a document in 1158 under the name de Allione . Later, the spellings Domus de Allionis (1178), Allonis (1223) and Prioratus de Ayllone (in the 14th century) appeared. The place name goes back to the personal name Allio or Allionis . In the remote valley east of the village was 1184 at the instigation of Humbert III. from Savoy founded the Carthusian monastery Aillon. The monks made the valley arable, whereupon settlers from the surrounding areas settled. The monastery was devastated by fire in 1582 and destroyed in 1793 during the French Revolution .

Since the 17th century, several forges and foundries have developed in the valley, in which the iron ore extracted from the area was processed. It was not until 1803 that the valley was divided into two parishes. This ultimately resulted in the split of the municipality of Aillon into the independent municipalities of Aillon-le-Vieux and Aillon-le-Jeune in 1863.

Attractions

The parish church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption was built in the 17th century and remodeled in the 19th century. The chapel of La Correrie was built by the Carthusians. Of the Aillon monastery, built around 1240, only one farm building has survived; the area is protected as a ground monument.

With 434 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Aillon-le-Jeune is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population fell sharply in the first half of the 20th century, the population has increased again since the early 1980s. The local residents of Aillon-le-Jeune are called Aillonais (es) in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Aillon-le-Jeune was a village dominated by agriculture , in particular dairy and cattle breeding. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Some employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area. The village today also benefits from summer and winter tourism. Aillon-le-Jeune includes the ski area on the western slope of Mont Pelat and part of the Margériaz ski area with several mountain railways and ski lifts.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Lescheraines over the Col des Prés to Thoiry. The closest connection to the A43 motorway is around 23 kilometers away.
