geography
La Compôte is located at 715 m , about 22 km northeast of the prefecture of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, in the center of the Bauges massif , in a valley basin at the mouth of the Ruisseau du Grand Nant in the Chéran , at the south-west foot of Mont Trélod .
The area of the 7.57 km² municipal area includes a section of the solid mass of the Bauges. The central part is taken up by the valley of the Chéran, which is around 1 km wide. The valley of the Grand Nant flows here from the north, and a small side valley from the south. The municipal area extends into this southern side valley and reaches the highest elevation of La Compôte at 1954 m at the height north of the summit of the Grand Colombier . The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).
La Compôte includes the hamlet of La Taillette ( 690 m ) in the valley south of the Chéran and a few individual farms. Neighboring municipalities of La Compôte are Doucy-en-Bauges in the north, Jarsy in the east, École and Aillon-le-Vieux in the south and Le Châtelard in the west.
history
La Compôte is first mentioned in a document in 1090 under the name Composta ; from 1432 the name Composte has been handed down. The name probably goes back to a personal name. Until the end of the Ancien Régime, La Compôte belonged to the Bauges rule.
Attractions
The village church of Sainte-Catherine was built in the 19th century. The Saint-Bernard chapel, which dates back to the 17th century, stands on a promontory south of the village.
