Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille is a French municipality with 491 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .
geography
Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille is located at 435 m , about 25 kilometers north-northwest of the prefecture of Chambéry and 28 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in the extreme northwest of the Savoie department, on a plateau between the Rhone Valley and Lac du Bourget , at the eastern foot of Mont Landard.
The area of the 9.75 km² municipal area includes a section on the west bank of Lac du Bourget. The municipality has a lakeshore line that is around 6 km long, with the bank areas in the northern part being relatively flat, and south of the Hautecombe peninsula there is a steep bank. The southern part of the municipality includes the wooded escarpment above the Abbaye de Hautecombe . Here, at the edge of the terrace of La Chapelle below the Mont de la Charvaz , the highest point of Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille is reached at 621 m .
In the north, the municipality extends from Lac du Bourget westward over the northern foothills of Mont de la Charvaz (part of the Chaîne de l'Épine ) into the basin of Saint-Pierre. This basin is bounded in the west by the forest height of Mont Landard ( 583 m ).
In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:
- Semela ( 350 m ) in a hollow above Lac du Bourget
- Quintieux ( 380 m ) in the Saint-Pierre basin, east of the village
- Curtille ( 400 m ) in the Saint-Pierre basin
- Abbaye de Hautecombe ( 240 m ) on the west bank of Lac du Bourget, at the foot of Mont de la Charvaz
Neighboring municipalities to Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille are Chanaz in the north, Conjux , Saint-Germain-la-Chambotte and Brison-Saint-Innocent in the east, La Chapelle-du-Mont-du-Chat and Ontex in the south and Lucey in the west .
history
Since the Middle Ages , Saint-Pierre has belonged to the Counts of Savoy . Under Amadeus III. the monastery of Hautecombe was founded on the lakeshore in 1125 , which also took direct control of the lands of Saint-Pierre.
Attractions
The most important attraction of the place is the Hautecombe monastery, burial place of the House of Savoy, which originally dates from the 12th century. The village church of Saint-Pierre was built in 1838. To the west of the village is the Château de Pomboz , which was built in the 15th century and extensively restored and redesigned in the 19th century.

With 491 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century, a significant increase in population has been recorded since the early 1980s. The local residents of Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille are called Valdecrenans in French .
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille was a predominantly agricultural village. Viticulture is particularly important on the Saint-Pierre plateau. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry areas.
The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Lucey to Chindrieux . Other road connections exist with Chanaz, Le Bourget-du-Lac and the Abbaye de Hautecombe . The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 26 km away.
