Bourdeau on the banks of the Lac du Bourget

Bourdeau is a commune in the Savoie department in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Bourdeau is located at 308  m , about 14 km north-northwest of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, slightly elevated above the west bank of the Lac du Bourget , roughly opposite Aix-les-Bains , at the foot of the Dent du Chat .

The area of the 4.83 km² municipal area (not including the lake) includes a section on the west bank of Lac du Bourget. The lakeshore is around two kilometers long, with the southern bank areas being relatively flat and the northern parts being steep. From the lakeshore, the community area extends westwards over the slope of Bourdeau and the densely wooded escarpment of the Chaîne de l'Épine . The western border runs on the ridge with the rugged limestone cliffs of Dent du Chat ( 1390  m ) and Molard Noir (at 1452  m, the highest point in Bourdeau). In the north, the municipal boundary is in the area of the Col du Chat .

Neighboring municipalities of Bourdeau are La Chapelle-du-Mont-du-Chat in the north, Aix-les-Bains and Tresserve in the east, Le Bourget-du-Lac in the south and Saint-Paul and Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu in the west.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document around 1100 under the name of Bordels . Later the names Bordellis (1248), Bordex (1330) and Bourdeaulx (1568) appeared. The place name goes back to the old French word bordeau (house, small farm). Since the High Middle Ages, Bourdeau was the center of a rule that belonged to the von Seyssel family and the von Aix family, was elevated to a barony in the 17th century and was always under the suzerainty of the House of Savoy .

Attractions

The parish church, whose origins go back to the 11th century, was given its present form when it was rebuilt in the 19th century. The castle, the earliest construction of which was built in the 9th century, is even older. Over the years it has been changed and restored several times, the last time in the 19th century. The Grotte de Lamartine is also worth seeing.

With 555 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) Bourdeau is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. Since the early 1960s, thanks to the beautiful residential area, there has been a significant increase in population. Numerous single-family houses were built outside the old town center.

Economy and Infrastructure

Up until the 20th century, Bourdeau was a village dominated by agriculture and fishing. In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry area. Thanks to its location on the lake, Bourdeau also benefits from day tourism.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located below the departmental road D1504, the former national road N504 from Chambéry through the Tunnel du Chat to Belley . Other road connections exist with the Col du Chat and Saint-Pierre-de-Curtille. The closest connection to the A 41 motorway is around 11 km away.
