Saint-Alban-Leysse is a French municipality with 6007 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is the capital of the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Saint-Alban-Leysse is located at 310  m , about 4 km east-northeast of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends to the west of the Savoie department, on the southern edge of the Bauges massif and at the foot of the Nivolet, at the entrance of the Leysse river into the Chambéry valley furrow.

The area of the 8.40 km² municipal area includes a section of the solid mass of the Bauges. The southern border mostly runs along the Leysse, which emerges from a deeply incised valley into the Chambéry valley and drains the area westward to the Lac du Bourget . The eastern boundary is marked by the Lovettaz erosion channel. From the course of the Leysse, the municipal area stretches northward over the valley level to the Mont ( 520  m ), a crossbar in the valley furrow of Chambéry, as well as over the wooded, rocky slope of the Nivolet. On the ledge below the summit, the highest point in Saint-Alban-Leysse is reached at 1240  m .

Saint-Alban-Leysse consists of different districts and hamlets, namely:

  • Saint-Alban ( 310  m ) at the foot of the Nivolet
  • Leysse ( 300  m ) at the entrance of the Leysse into the valley furrow of Chambéry
  • Chesses ( 315  m ) at the foot of the Nivolet
  • La Clusaz ( 380  m ) in a valley between the Mont and the slope of the Nivolet

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Alban-Leysse are Sonnaz and Verel-Pragondran in the north, Saint-Jean-d'Arvey and Barby in the east, La Ravoire in the south and Bassens and Chambéry in the west.

history

The municipality of Saint-Alban-Leysse was settled very early. Traces of the human presence during the Neolithic have been found at Saint-Saturnin ; other remains come from Roman times . The parish was first mentioned around 1100 ( ecclesia sancti Albani ) and has Saint Alban of Verulamium as its namesake. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Alban formed its own rule, which first belonged to the La Ravoire family and then (1317) passed to the Counts of Savoy . After several changes of feudal lords in the 15th and 16th centuries, Saint-Alban achieved the rank of baronnie in 1598 . In 1803 the hamlet of Leysse was separated from Saint-Jean-d'Arvey and merged with the municipality of Saint-Alban. In order to avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, the official name Saint-Alban-Leysse was introduced in 1946.

Attractions

Other attractions in the village is the church of Saint-Alban, the chapel Saint-Saturnin and as part historique monument inscribed oratory Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours from the 18th century and the Château de La Croix.

A significant increase in population has been recorded since the early 1980s. Since then the number of inhabitants has doubled. Saint-Alban-Leysse is part of the Chambéry agglomeration. Today, the settlement area has merged seamlessly with that of the neighboring communities of Bassens, La Ravoire and Barby.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until the 20th century, Saint-Alban-Leysse was mainly a village characterized by agriculture , especially viticulture . Viticulture still plays an important role on the sunny slopes above the village. Saint-Alban-Leysse is located in the Savoie wine-growing region . White wines made from the Altesse grape variety (locally called Roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin Roussette de Savoie . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white wines of other grape varieties and red wines .

In the past few decades, various commercial and industrial zones have emerged on the valley floor. The Camiva company, which specializes in the construction of fire fighting vehicles, should be mentioned as an important company. There are also numerous other companies in the electricity, construction and transport industry, IT, as well as trading companies, service companies and shopping businesses.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. It is located near the main road D1006, the former N6 national road from Lyon via Chambéry to Modane .
