Vions is a French municipality with 403 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Vions is located at 240  m , near Culoz , about 30 kilometers north of the prefecture of Chambéry and 26 kilometers west-southwest of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The village extends in the extreme north-west of the Savoie department, in the Chautagne in the Rhone Valley at the southern foot of a hill, near the Lac du Bourget .

The area of the 3.70 km 2 municipal area covers a section of the Rhone Valley. The main part of the area is taken up by the extensive valley plain (on average 235  m ), which connects to the north of the Lac du Bourget and connects to the Rhone Valley. The plain, once a large swamp area, is now drained, especially in the peripheral zones, while there is still an uncultivated moor area in the core zone ( Marais de Chautagne ). In the middle of this plain rises the Mollard de Vions , an isolated hill on which the highest point of Vions is reached at 397  m . To the west, the community area extends partially to the Rhone. In the south, the area extends over the valley floor to the Canal de Savières , the outflow of Lac du Bourget, and to the foot of Mont Landard .

In addition to the actual town center, Vions also includes several hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:

  • Bovéron ( 240  m ) at the southeast foot of the Mollard de Vions
  • Mollard-Dessus ( 240  m ) at the north foot of the Mollard de Vions
  • Les Granges ( 240  m ) on the banks of the Canal de Savières

Neighboring communities of Vions are Ruffieux in the north, Chindrieux in the east, Chanaz in the south and Culoz in the west.

history

Vions, previously written Vyons , is first mentioned in a document in the Middle Ages. The village belonged to the domain of the Montluel family, who resided at the Château de Châtillon on the Lac du Bourget. The Augustinians founded a priory here in the 12th century.

Attractions

The village church of Vions was built in the 19th century. Remains of the priory (12th century) are preserved on the Mollard de Vions.

In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry areas.

The village is located off the main thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Yenne to Ruffieux. Another road connection exists with Chindrieux. Vions has a train station on the Culoz – Modane railway line .
