The district of Tormery below the Roche Blanche on the edge of the Bauges

Chignin is a French municipality with 862 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Montmélian in the Arrondissement of Chambéry and is a member of the Cœur de Savoie municipality .

geography

location

Chignin is located at 368  m , about 9 km southeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 43 km north-northeast of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). The village lies above the valley furrow of Chambéry on the southern edge of the Bauges , a pre-Alpine limestone massif , to whose Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ) the municipality belongs. Neighboring parishes of Chignin are

topography

The area of the 8.32 km 2 municipal area includes a section of the Bauges massif on the slopes of its southernmost ridge. The chain of peaks with the Roche Blanche and the Roc de Tormery on this ridge marks the eastern boundary of the municipality and, at 1254  m, forms the highest point in Chignin. From there, the wooded terrain drops steeply and evenly to a height of around 450  m , below which the settlement area and the vineyards of Chignins connect on a slightly reliefed terrain. At a height of 300  m , the communal soil finally reaches the valley furrow of Chambéry, of which a strip several kilometers long and a few hundred meters wide still belongs to the municipality. Due to the porous subsoil of the limestone massif, there are no significant flowing waters in the area of the municipality. A small stream at the bottom of the valley furrow marks the western boundary of the municipality.

Community structure

In addition to the actual town center, Chignin also includes several hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:

  • Mont Levin ( 428  m ) in the north on the road to La Boisserette in Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré,
  • Le Villard ( 415  m ) east of the town center,
  • Le Viviers ( 393  m ) north of the town center,
  • Le Clos des Moulins ( 306  m ) new housing estate on the valley floor,
  • Haut de la Gare ( 304  m ) district at the former Chignin-Les Marches train station,
  • Tormery ( 347  m ) in the south of the municipality in the middle of the Chignin vineyards.

history

The municipality of Chignin was already settled in Roman times, as evidenced by the finds of graves, coins and floor plans of a Gallo-Roman villa. In the Middle Ages the place first appeared in the documents around 1100 as Capella de castro Chinino and Ecclesia de Chinino . The place name goes back to a family name and means something like Gut des Canius . A document from 1244 shows that the original chignin was in the area of today's Château des Favraz on the soil of the municipality of Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré.

In the Middle Ages and under the sovereignty of the House of Savoy-Piedmont , Chignin was dominated by the de Chignin family of the same name and later changed hands several times. This dominion was already fortified in the 13th century by an arrangement of fortified towers, seven of which are still preserved today.

Chignin owned a joint station with Les Marches on the Culoz – Modane railway line, opened in 1857 . After a longer function as a breakpoint, it was shut down at the end of the 20th century.

Attractions

The scenic sights of Chignin are the extensive vineyards around the districts as well as the steep chain of the Bauges, which is accessible with hiking trails and offers views both over the valley furrows of Chambéry and Grésivaudan as well as into the interior of the Bauges massif. The medieval towers of Chignin are inscribed as a monument historique . Standing separately, they enclose an area of around five hectares and have been preserved in different states. Its exact function is unclear.

The local residents of Chignin are called Chignerain (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Viticulture

The Chignin vineyards at the foot of the Bauges

Until well into the 20th century, Chignin was a predominantly agricultural village. Viticulture on the gently sloping terrain at the foot of the Bauges is particularly important today . As part of the Savoie wine-growing region , the AOC Vin de Savoie generally applies to white , rosé and red wines of various grape varieties . Chignin is the center of two other, more strictly defined designations of origin for wines that are produced in the approved locations from the grape harvest to bottling. One is Vin de Savoie Chignin for white wines with Jacquère as the main grape variety (at least 80% of the white vines) and for red wines with Gamay , Mondeuse and Pinot Noir as the main grape varieties (together at least 90% of the red vines). The second designation of origin is Vin de Savoie Chignin-Bergeron and applies to a single- origin Roussanne , a rare grape variety with the local name Bergeron . In contrast to the first, the AOC Chignin-Bergeron is not only valid in Chignin, but includes the entire southern foot of the Bauges in the Francin and Montmélian area .

economy

In addition, there are now various local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Chambéry area.

traffic

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. The department road D1006, the former national road N6 between Chambéry and Modane , runs through the district of Haut de la Gare . The next motorway connection to the A43 , which is subject to toll here, is directly on the municipal border with Les Marches. The Culoz – Modane railway line runs alongside the motorway, and the nearest train station is in the center of Chambéry. The Chambéry-Savoie passenger airport is also part of the greater Chambéry area , 23 km from Chignin.
