geography

location

Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré is located at 337  m , about six kilometers southeast of the prefecture of Chambéry and 43 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). Neighboring municipalities to Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré are Challes-les-Eaux and Curienne in the north, Chignin in the east and Myans in the south and west.

topography

The area of the 5.34 km 2 municipal area extends on the southwestern edge of the Bauges , a limestone massif in the northern French Prealps. The main part of the municipality lies in the valley furrow of Chambéry, which separates the Bauges from the Chartreuse Mountains. This part is continuously populated and, together with the neighboring communities, forms the outer suburbs of Chambéry. The eastern part also includes a valley cut in the summit chain on the edge of the Bauges, which enables a road connection to the communities located there. Here the municipality extends up to 901  m .

Community structure

In addition to the actual town center on the valley floor, Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré also includes the hamlet of La Boisserette ( 440  m ) in the valley cut in the foothills of the Bauges.

history

Saint-Georges du Prieuré , the former priory church of Saint-Jeoire

The first written mention of a parish at this point took place around 1100 under the name Ecclesia Sancti Georgii . Two centuries later, the modification to Jeoire and Latinized Jorius , which occurs in Savoy and Piedmont, was in use. In 1110, Bishop Hugo of Grenoble founded a priory of the Augustinian Canons in Saint-Jeoire , which initially included the churches and parishes of Saint Georges , Saint Pierre in Chignin, Saint Vincent in Triviers (now Challes-les-Eaux), and Saint Jean -Baptist in Barby and Saint Maurice in Curienne. In the following centuries four more parishes were added. In 1599, the priory was one of the first to be integrated into the Sainte Maison de Thonon , an instrument of the Counter-Reformation in Chablais created by Pope Clement VIII . The church of the old priory is still preserved today, so that the place name was given the addition -Prieuré in 1901 .

Attractions

The church building of the former priory church of Saint Georges dates from the last quarter of the 14th century and the 15th century and is inscribed together with its inventory as monument historique . It replaced the Romanesque church from 1110, of which two bays were taken over in the later construction.

With 1704 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Savoie department. In the 19th and first third of the 20th century, the population decreased continuously. A significant increase in population has been recorded again since the 1940s. The local residents of Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré are called Saint-Jeoriens and Saint-Jeoriennes in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré was predominantly an agricultural village. Viticulture is still important today , as the municipality belongs to the Savoie wine-growing region . The AOC Vin de Savoie applies to white , rosé and red wines of various grape varieties . For white wines with jacquère as the main grape variety , the stricter and exclusive designation of origin Vin de Savoie Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré also applies if the wine was made on site from the grape harvest to bottling.

In addition, there are now various local small businesses. The steady influx of residents since the middle of the 20th century has meanwhile made the place into a residential community whose employed people are mainly commuters with jobs in the Chambéry area.

The place is well developed in terms of traffic. The department road D1006, the former national road N6 between Chambéry and Modane , runs through the town center . The next motorway connections to the A43 , which crosses the community in the west, are in the immediate vicinity on the territory of the neighboring communities. The Culoz – Modane railway line runs alongside the motorway, and the nearest train station is in the center of Chambéry. The greater Chambéry area also includes the Chambéry-Savoie passenger airport , which is 20 kilometers from Saint-Jeoire-Prieuré.
