David H. McCormick (2012)

David Harold McCormick (* 1965 in Bloomsburg , Pennsylvania ) is an American officer in the US Army , civil servant , consultant and manager . He was veteran of the Second Gulf War , CEO of FreeMarkets and Under Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs. Since 2009 he has been Co- CEO of Bridgewater Associates , the largest hedge fund in the world.

Life

Military background

Origin and graduate from West Point

McCormick comes from Columbia County in the east of the US state Pennsylvania. There he attended Bloomsburg Senior High School from 1979 to 1983. As a teenager he was active in the football team and as a wrestler .

He began in 1983 at the United States Military Academy (USMA) in West Point , New York and studied mechanical engineering for a bachelor's degree . During his student days, he was East Coast Runner-Up twice, Letterman four times, and twice competed in the NCAA Division I Championships. He was awarded the Arvin Award. An internship at the Political Military Bureau at the State Department of the United States should have a lasting impact on him. McCormick was promoted to Cadet Captain and battalion commander responsible for 400 cadets. In 1987 he received his diploma. For two semesters he studied at Columbia University in New York, where u. a. the political scientist Roger Hilsman was one of his teachers. He then completed the Engineer Officer Basic Training and attended the United States Army Airborne School and the Ranger School (Honor Graduate).

War deployment as a company commander in Kuwait

In 1988 he was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg , North Carolina as a lieutenant . During "Operation Desert Storm" (1991) he was company commander of the United States Army Corps of Engineers , responsible for 130 soldiers, deployed in Kuwait for mine clearance and ammunition destruction. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal . After returning to the United States, he was promoted to captain ; he also completed the Engineer Officer Advanced Course. In 1992 he left.

Studied at Princeton University

McCormick made a world tour after his military service and then enrolled at Princeton University in Princeton , New Jersey. There he earned a Masters and a PhD in 1996 ( Ph.D. ) at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs . To finish his work, he was again in the army for a few months. In 1998, based on his doctorate, he published the book The Downsized Warrior: America's Army in Transition , published by New York University Press.

Career in business and administration

CEO of FreeMarkets

From 1996 to 1999 he was a consultant at the management consultancy McKinsey & Company in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania. In 1999 he was poached and joined the IT company FreeMarkets. After the company's IPO , he was elected President within a few months (2001) and CEO in 2002. Under his Rigide the company has developed despite the dot-com bubble well and 500 million dollars , he sold it in 2004 to Ariba from California, where he became president.

Station as Under Secretary in the Treasury

In 2005, US President George W. Bush appointed him to his cabinet as Under Secretary for Export Administration . After a few months he became Deputy National Security Advisor for Economic Affairs. He coordinated u. a. the meetings of the G7 and the G20 and kept close contact with the President. In 2007 he was hired by the Secretary of Treasury, Henry Paulson , as Under Secretary for International Affairs. This made him the leading international US business diplomat. At the height of the financial crisis in 2008 , he largely managed the US government's response to events.

Bridgewater Associates CEO

McCormick has served as co-president and a member of the Management Committee of Bridgewater Associates in Westport , Connecticut , since 2009 .

Other functions and memberships

McCormick is the Distinguished Service Professor of Information Technology , Public Policy and Management at John Heinz III College at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania. Teaching and research are about business and public policy.

He is a trustee of the Aspen Institute think tank in Washington, DC and Carnegie Mellon University, a private research institute. He is also a member of the Trilateral Commission , the Council on Foreign Relations and the Aspen Strategy Group.

In 2013, as a supporter of same-sex marriage, he was one of the Republican co-signers of an Amicus Curiae .

McCormick and his wife have four children. He lives in the US state of Connecticut .
