Founded on September 4, 1918 as Camp Bragg , Fort Bragg is today with around 43,000 soldiers (10% of the active Army personnel) and 8,000 civilian employees the largest Army base and the world's largest facility for airborne troops and one of the largest military complexes in the world. The most important replenishment centers and most important training facilities of the US Army as well as the soldiers' accommodations are located on the 650 km² site .
Known as the Home of The Airborne and Special Operations Forces , Fort Bragg is the headquarters of the Paratroopers of the US Army, XVIII. US Airborne Corps (XVIII. Airborne Corps) and the operational command for special units of the US Army, the US Army Special Operations Command .
In addition to the center for parachute jump training (up to 100,000 jumps per year), the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School , the training academy for special forces , is also located here . Fort Bragg has the most modern exercise and training area of the US Army.
At the same time, the base is also the center for the military fight against terrorism . This area used by the Delta Force is specially secured and only accessible to non-uniters with a special permit. The unit's training ground, called Range 19 , was modernized for $ 80 million in the early 1980s and is also used by the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team for joint exercises.
In the 1970s, the base hit the headlines for a triple homicide committed by Jeffrey MacDonald , Captain of the Green Berets .
On October 27, 1995, William Kreutzer Jr. killed an officer and injured 18 soldiers.
