history

The center of La Bridoire with the Saint-Pierre church

The village of La Bridoire first appeared in the documents as Villa de Bredoria in the High Middle Ages in 1142 , later name variants were Bridoria (1249), Brodueri (1288) and La Bourduire (1627). The name corresponds to the word “borderie”, which still exists in French today, for a small - cell lease . In the Middle Ages, La Bridoire belonged to the lords of Verel under the suzerainty of the Counts of Savoy . It was not until shortly before the French Revolution that La Bridoire also had a small lordship that was elevated to the status of a baronnie .

In the 19th century, several mills were built along the slope of the Tier, including a grain and a textile mill, the buildings of which are still preserved today. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Société Hydro-Electrique de la Bridoire was founded in La Bridoire , which built a hydroelectric power station between 1909 and 1911, which is still in function today. The power plant is located on the northern edge of the municipality at the foot of the step and is fed by the Tier stream, the outflow of Lac d'Aiguebelette . Via an underground pressure pipe, it uses the height difference of 125 m between the lake and the plain below the stepped terrain. The lake thus serves as a reservoir, the water level of which, however, may only fluctuate within a two meter area. At the beginning, the plant mainly supplied a local network and ensured the continued existence of the electrically operated mills. It was also part of the regional networks of the Société Grenobloise de Force et Lumière , which became the owner of the power plant in 1931. Today it belongs to EDF and has an installed turbine output of 8750 kW .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, La Bridoire was a village characterized by both agriculture and smaller industrial companies. Today, in addition to a few farms, there are various local small-scale businesses and two medium-sized industrial companies. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the neighboring departments.

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Le Pont-de-Beauvoisin to Lac d'Aiguebelette. Further road connections exist with the surrounding neighboring communities. The next motorway connection to the A43 (Lyon – Chambéry) is eleven kilometers away at Saint-Genix. There are train stations on the little-traveled Saint-André-le-Gaz-Chambéry railway , which crosses the municipality, in the neighboring towns of Lépin-le-Lac and Saint-Béron. The airports in the region are Lyon-St-Exupéry (distance 69 km) and Chambéry-Savoie (24 km).
