Saint-Jean-d'Arvey is a French commune with 1,697 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Saint-Alban-Leysse in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

Saint-Jean-d'Arvey is located at 570  m , about six kilometers east-northeast of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The former farming village extends in the west of the Savoie department, in the south of the Bauges massif , in a panoramic position on a terrace above the Leysse valley and the Chambéry valley, at the foot of Mont Peney .

The area of the 13.01 km² municipal area includes a section of the solid mass of the Bauges. The eastern and southern borders always run along the Leysse, which has created a deep indented valley here and drains the area to the west to Lac du Bourget . The western boundary is marked by the Lovettaz erosion channel. The municipal area extends northward from the Leysse valley to the distinctive terrace of Saint-Jean-d'Arvey. This, in turn, is dominated by the striking precipices of Mont Peney ( 1356  m ). The relatively flat northern roof of this mountain also belongs to the municipality. A narrow tip extends to the northwest along the cliffs of the Nivolet . At the monumental summit cross of the Nivolet, the highest point of Saint-Jean-d'Arvey is reached at 1545  m . The municipality lies within the Regional Nature Park Massif des Bauges (French: Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges ).

In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Jean-d'Arvey also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Le Villard ( 590  m ) on the terrace to the east of the village
  • Lovettaz ( 670  m ) in an erosion valley on the southern slope of the Nivolet

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Jean-d'Arvey are Les Déserts in the north, Thoiry in the east, Puygros , Curienne and Barby in the south and Saint-Alban-Leysse and Verel-Pragondran in the west.

history

Above the village center of Saint-Jean-d'Arvey in the rock face of Mont Peney there is an abri (inscribed as monument historique ) in which remains of settlements from the Copper Age were found.

The parish of Saint-Jean-d'Arvey, which was dependent on the diocese of Grenoble in the Middle Ages, was first mentioned in a document around 1100 as Parrocchia Arvisii de Tovelia and Ecclesia sancti Johannis de Arvesio . The place name changed from Saint-Jéhan-d'Alveys to Saint-Jéhan-d'Alvay (1632) to the current spelling. In the Middle Ages, the village first belonged to the Arvey domain, then to the domain of Chaffardon Castle, which is located in what is now the municipality. Chaffardon was merged with the Baronnie La Bâtie in the Ancien Régime and rose to become Marquisate in 1682 . In 1803, the hamlet of Leysse on the river of the same name was separated from Saint-Jean-d'Arvey and merged with the municipality of Saint-Alban.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Jean-d'Arvey was built in the 19th century. Chaffardon Castle is to the west of the village.

With 1697 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Jean-d'Arvey is one of the smaller communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century, a marked increase in population has been recorded again since the early 1970s thanks to the attractive residential area. Since then, the number of inhabitants has tripled.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Saint-Jean-d'Arvey was a village dominated by agriculture , mainly dairy and cattle breeding. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has developed into a residential community. Many employed people are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Chambéry area.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located on the D912 departmental road that leads from Chambéry through the Bauges massif to Annecy . Another road connection is via the Col des Prés with Aillon-le-Jeune . The closest connection to the A43 motorway is around 9 km away.
