The area of the 12.73 square kilometer municipal area covers a section of the French Alpine foothills. The central part of the area is occupied by the wide valley basin that extends southward from the Rumilly basin to the Lac du Bourget. In the Grésy-sur-Aix area, this depression has a flat valley floor around 1.5 km wide. Here the Deisse flows into the Sierre , which drains the area to the southwest to the Lac du Bourget. In the west, the valley basin is flanked by the southernmost foothills of the Montagne de la Biolle ; On the wooded ridge, the highest point in Grésy-sur-Aix is reached at 620  m . To the east, the community area extends over the gently sloping slope to below Trévignin at the foot of Mont Revard.

In addition to the actual town center, Grésy-sur-Aix also includes several hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Crains ( 290  m ) in the Sierre Valley at the foot of the Montagne de la Biolle
  • Les Gents ( 350  m ) south of the village
  • Les Choseaux ( 450  m ) on the slope above Aix-les-Bains
  • Les Maguets ( 470  m ) on a plateau south of the Sierre valley
  • Arbussin ( 340  m ) in the valley north of the Sierre
  • Les Mélets ( 450  m ) on the eastern slope of the Deisse
  • Droise ( 330  m ) in the valley of the Deisse

history

The municipality of Grésy-sur-Aix was populated very early. Traces from the Bronze Age , wall foundations from the Roman period and a burial ground from the Burgundian period were discovered. The first written mention of the place took place in the 11th century under the names de Grasiaco and de Graisieu . Later the names Gresieu (1201), Graysiacum (1215), de Gresiaco , de Greysiaco (1289), Gressie (1312), Greysie (1316), Greysi en Genevois (1555) and Grésy-en-Genevois . The place name goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Gratius and means something like Landgut des Gratius ( Gratiacum ).

In the Middle Ages, Grésy formed its own rule under the Grésy family, who came from the Faucigny family. In the 14th century this dominion gained an important position in the border area of the counties of Genevois and Savoy before it finally came under the sovereignty of Savoy in 1401. In 1793 the municipality of Grésy-en-Genevois was renamed Grésy-sur-Aix.

From 1973 to 2015 the municipality was the main town (French: chef-lieu ) of the canton of Aix-les-Bains-Nord-Grésy (initially only called canton Grésy-sur-Aix).

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste was built in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. In the hamlet of Droise there is a chapel that also dates from the 19th century. A tower from the 12th century has been preserved from the former Château de Grésy. In the area of the village and on the surrounding slopes there are numerous castles and mansions, including the Château de Mouxy (from the 15th century, remodeled in the 18th century), the Château de Loche (from the 15th to 17th centuries, with rich interior and a castle chapel) in a beautiful park, the Château du Fontany and the Château de Varax.

After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century, there has been a significant increase in population since the early 1970s thanks to the attractive residential area. Since then the number of inhabitants has almost tripled. The settlement area of Grésy-sur-Aix has now merged seamlessly with that of Aix-les-Bains.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until the 20th century, Grésy-sur-Aix was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , particularly viticulture . Today viticulture no longer plays a role. In the past few decades, larger commercial and industrial zones have emerged on the valley floor. Various construction and transport companies, trading companies, service companies and shops have settled here. In addition, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work mainly in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry area.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. It is located above the D1201 department road, which, as the former N201, leads from Aix-les-Bains to Annecy . Further regional road connections exist with Cusy and via Mont Revard with Les Déserts . A connection with a toll station to the  A41 motorway (Chambéry – Geneva) is located in the municipality. Grésy-sur-Aix has a train station on the Aix-les-Bains – Annemasse line .
