The Mayor's Office ( Mairie ) of Brison-Saint-Innocent

Brison-Saint-Innocent is a French commune in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Brison-Saint-Innocent is located at 288  m , near Aix-les-Bains , about 18 kilometers north of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The village extends in the foothills of the Alps, on a peninsula slightly elevated above the east bank of Lac du Bourget , at the foot of Mont de Corsuet.

The area of the 8.75 square kilometer municipal area (excluding the lake) includes a section on the east bank of Lac du Bourget. The lakeshore is divided into the peninsula of Brison-Saint-Innocent, the Baie de Grésine to the north and the rocky promontory of Brison (near the northern border of the area). In the area of the peninsula, the lake shore is relatively flat, while in the northern part there are steep and rocky shore areas. From the lakeshore, the community area stretches eastward over a steep, mostly wooded slope, criss-crossed by various striking rock faces, to the long ridge of the Mont de Corsuet , which geologically forms the southernmost branch of the anticline of the Montagne du Gros Foug . On the ridge of the Mont de Corsuet is at 854 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Brison-Saint-Innocent.

The village is characterized by an extremely mild climate, as it is located on a sun-exposed peninsula and is protected from the cool and cold north and north-east winds by the mountain range of Mont de Corsuet. It is therefore also known as Nice savoyarde (Savoyard Nice).

Brison-Saint-Innocent consists of the districts Brison , Saint-Innocent and Grésine (on the bay of the same name). Neighboring municipalities of Brison-Saint-Innocent are Saint-Germain-la-Chambotte in the north, La Biolle and Grésy-sur-Aix in the east, Aix-les-Bains in the south, and La Chapelle-du-Mont-du-Chat and Saint- Pierre-de-Curtille to the west.

history

The municipality of Brison-Saint-Innocent was settled very early. On the lakeshore in the Baie de Grésine, the remains of a Bronze Age pile dwelling settlement were found. They have been classified as Monument historique since 2011 and at the same time were included in the list of prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps of the UNESCO World Heritage . Dendrochronological investigations were able to prove three consecutive settlement periods based on different felling dates of the wood used for construction, repair or expansion. In the north of the site the settlement period reached from 993 BC. BC to 904 BC In the other parts there are two more recent periods, from 904 BC. BC to 869 BC BC and 843 BC BC to 831 BC Traces have also been preserved from Roman times .

The village of Saint-Innocent was first mentioned in a document in the early 12th century. A priory was probably founded in Saint-Innocent at the end of the 11th century, which was combined with the Hautecombe monastery (on the opposite bank of the lake) in the 15th century . In 1792, Brison-les-Oliviers and Saint-Innocent were merged to form what is now the dual municipality of Brison-Saint-Innocent.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Innocent dates from the 13th century and was remodeled in the 19th century. It stands on the site of a Roman temple that was dedicated to Mars. The Brison Chapel dates back to the late 11th century. The oldest parts of the castle of Saint-Innocent also date from the 11th century, while most of the residential buildings were built in the 16th century.

The portals of a railway tunnel ( Tunnel de Brison ) opened in 1857 are inscribed as a monument historique . They are decorated with stone towers in a medieval style. The railway line belongs to the Culoz – Modane railway line and runs directly on the lake shore, partly on artificially built dams, so that the community is almost completely cut off from access to the lake. There is only a beach on a small headland ( Pointe de l'Ardre ).
