Apremont is a French commune with 1,013 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Montmélian in the Arrondissement of Chambéry and is a member of the Cœur de Savoie municipality .

geography

location

Apremont is located at 339  m , about eight kilometers south of the prefecture of Chambéry and 39 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Grenoble (as the crow flies). The community is a scattered settlement in the northeastern foothills of the pre-Alpine limestone massif of the Chartreuse . It is located within the Chartreuse Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional de la Chartreuse ). Neighboring municipalities of Apremont are Saint-Baldoph in the north, Myans and Les Marches in the east, Entremont-le-Vieux in the south-west and Montagnole in the north-west.

topography

The area of the 17.76 km 2 municipal area includes a strongly reliefed area on the northern slope of Mont Granier , a 1933  m high peak in the northeast corner of the Chartreuse massif. To the west, the municipal boundary follows a chain of peaks that stretches from Mont Granier over the Col du Granier pass ( 1134  m ), the Pointe de la Bornée ( 1507  m ) and Mont Joigny ( 1556  m , highest point in the municipality) to the Pointe de la Gorgeat ( 1486  m ). From these elevations, the municipality falls eastwards at first steeply, then more gently to the valley furrow of Chambéry. This slope is almost entirely wooded down to about 600  m . The subsoil consists partly of a cone of rubble left by a landslide on the flank of Mont Granier, and is therefore permeable to water. Several small streams lead away the surface water and form the source of the Albanne , a tributary of the Leysse .

Community structure

The municipality of Apremont consists of several districts and hamlet settlements , including:

  • Le Gaz ( 325  m ) the largest district directly above Myans, seat of the local government,
  • Saint Pierre ( 360  m ) north of Le Gaz and location of the church and cemetery,
  • Pierre Grosse ( 338  m ) south of Le Gaz ,
  • Le Sévert (around 600  m ) on the wooded steep slope above Le Gaz .

history

The slipped north side of Mont Granier today

The name Apremont appears for the first time in the High Middle Ages around 1100 as Capella de Aspero Monte , followed in 1191 by Ecclesia Sancti Petri de Asperomonte . At the time, the Latin asper mons (Eng .: rough mountain) referred to the neighboring mountain peak, while Granier was the name of a Benedictine priory from the 12th century, which is located between Apremont and the market town of Saint-André in the area of today's municipality Les Marches located ( Monasterium quod Granarium dicitur , 1097).

Towards the end of 1248 the north side of Mont Granier suddenly collapsed and created a scree avalanche that reached up to 7.5 km down into the valley and hit and destroyed the villages of Granier and Saint-André with a maximum width of 6.5 km . As a result, the name Granier carried over to the mountain top, while the priory responsible for the parish of Apremont moved to Saint-Baldoph. Towards the end of the 13th century, a small lordship was established in Apremont, which was under the sovereignty of the Counts of Savoy and which changed hands several times until the French Revolution .

With 1013 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Apremont is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 732 inhabitants), the population has increased again since the mid-1970s. The local residents of Apremont are called Apremolain (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Apremont was a predominantly agricultural village. Viticulture is particularly important today , as it concentrates on the locations whose subsoil arose from the landslide. As part of the Savoie wine-growing region , the AOC Vin de Savoie generally applies to white , rosé and red wines of various grape varieties . For white wines with jacquère as the main grape variety , the stricter designations of origin Vin de Savoie Apremont and Vin de Savoie Les Abymes also apply , provided that the wine was produced on site from the grape harvest to bottling.

In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Most of the employed are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Chambéry area.

The village is a little off the main thoroughfares on a department road that connects Le Gaz with Myans and Saint-Baldoph. At higher altitudes, the D912 runs from Saint-Pierre-d'Entremont over the Col du Granier to Chambéry. The next motorway connection to the A43 is around 4 km away. The nearest train station on the Culoz – Modane railway line is in the center of Chambéry. The Chambéry-Savoie passenger airport is also part of the greater Chambéry area , 20 km from Apremont.
