Traize is a French municipality with 318 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry and is a member of the Yenne community association .

Traize is located at 448  m , about 17 kilometers northwest of the prefecture of Chambéry and 71 kilometers east of the city of Lyon (as the crow flies). The village is located on the western edge of the Savoie department, a few kilometers from the Rhone . Neighboring communities of Traize are Yenne in the north, Saint-Paul in the east, La Chapelle-Saint-Martin and Loisieux in the south and La Balme in the west.

The area of ​​the 9.48 km 2 municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura on a broad base, which rises east of the municipality to a ridge ( anticline ) rising to about 1500  m , the Mont du Chat . To the west, the communal soil rises gently to a ridge that drops about 400 m down to the Rhone. At this edge, which also forms the western boundary of the municipality, the municipality reaches its highest point at 700  m . The slightly hilly municipal area is drained by several streams that flow over the Flon into the Rhone. The eastern municipal boundary is in the area of ​​the Flon valley, which is deepened into the terrain.

Community structure

In addition to the actual town center, Traize also includes several hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:

  • Charosse and Les Malods ( 460  m ) west of the village center,
  • Verlin ( 441  m ) east of the village above the forested valley of the Flon, which is about 150 m deep
  • Soirin ( 400  m ) east of the village above the Flon valley, which is about 100 m deep

history

The village of Traize is first mentioned in the 14th century, at a time when it was part of the lordship of the Dragonnière .

Attractions

Two castles were built on the Traize area in the Middle Ages and are now privately owned. These are the Château de Beyrin from the 15th century and the Château de la Martinière , whose origins date back to the 13th and 14th centuries.

With 318 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Traize is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population fell slightly in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were still 325 inhabitants), the population has increased again since the 1980s. The locals of Traize are called Traizelan (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

To this day, Traize is predominantly an agricultural village. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares and is accessible via branches of the department of road D921 which Yenne to Novalaise leads. The closest connection to the A43 motorway as part of the regional motorway network is 16 km away. The greater Chambéry area with its Chambéry-Savoie airport and the SNCF train station is around 30 km away.

In Traize there is a state école primaire (elementary school with an integrated preschool ).
