Saint-Paul is a French municipality with 686 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It belongs to the canton of Bugey Savoyard in the Arrondissement of Chambéry and is a member of the Yenne community association .

geography

location

Saint-Paul is located at 432  m , about 16 kilometers northwest of the prefecture of Chambéry and 74 kilometers east of the city of Lyon (as the crow flies). The village is on the western slope of a mountain range that separates Lac du Bourget from the Rhone Valley . Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Paul are Yenne and Billième in the north, Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu , Bourdeau and Le Bourget-du-Lac in the east, Meyrieux-Trouet and La Chapelle-Saint-Martin in the south and Traize in the west.

topography

The area of the 13.25 km 2 municipality covers a section of the southern French Jura on the west side of an anticline that extends between the Lac du Bourget and the Rhone Valley in a north-south direction. The summit ridge of these anticlines forms the eastern boundary of the municipality in the area of Mont du Chat , where the highest point of Saint-Paul is reached at 1,496  m . At the foot of its steep, wooded western slope begins a plain in relief, over which the various hamlets of Saint-Paul are spread. A small stream, the Flon , drains the municipality northwards to the Rhone and at the same time forms the western municipality boundary.

Community structure

In addition to the actual town center, Saint-Paul also has several hamlet settlements and farmsteads, including:

  • les Moirouds ( 365  m ) on the northern edge of the municipality along the road connection with Yenne
  • le Molard ( 565  m ), les Rozels and Lutrin (both 460  m ) at the foot of Mont du Chat .
  • les Vellats , les Vincents and Santagneux (between 410  m and 450  m ) in the south of the municipality on the road to Novalaise .

history

In the Middle Ages, the lands of Saint-Paul belonged to the dominion of Saint-Agneux , which had its seat in what is now Santagneux . It was first mentioned in 1272 as Centagniacum and probably goes back to the Gallo-Roman name Sentenus . Saint-Paul-sur-Yenne , first mentioned in the 14th century, belonged to Saint-Agneux as well as the surrounding villages of Trouet, Meyrieux and Verthemex. The rule rose in 1773, shortly before the end of the Ancien Régime , to marquisate .

Attractions

From the summit chain of Mont du Chat , which is accessible via a hiking trail, there is an impressive view both to the east with the Lac du Bourget and the city of Chambéry in front of the Alpine panorama and to the west with the Jura ridges behind the Rhone.

The remains of the Saint-Agneux permanent house now form the Rubod homestead . Another medieval house, the Maison forte de Choisel , has also been preserved.

With 686 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Paul is one of the small communities in the Savoie department. After the population declined in the first half of the 20th century (in 1901 there were 572 inhabitants), the population has increased again since the mid-1980s. The local residents of Saint-Paul are called Sanpaulan (e) s in French .

Economy and Infrastructure

A transmission tower on Mont du Chat

Saint-Paul is a predominantly agricultural village. In addition, there are still some local small businesses. In the meantime the village has also developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who go to work in the larger towns in the area, especially in the Aix-les-Bains and Chambéry areas.

The department road D1504, which is the former national road N504 from Ambérieu-en-Bugey to Chambéry, runs across the municipality . This crosses the Mont du Chat in a 1.5 km long tunnel opened in 1932 and facilitates the connection to the greater Chambéry area with its airport , SNCF train station and connections to the A41 and A43 motorways . The village center of Saint-Paul and its various hamlet settlements are somewhat off this main road and are accessed from side roads. Among them is the serpentine road D42, which is not passable all year round, which leads directly from Saint-Paul over the Mont du Chat to the neighboring Le Bourget-du-Lac.

There is a state primary school ( école élémentaire ) in Saint-Paul .
