La Motte-Servolex is a French municipality with 11,826 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . It is the capital of the canton of La Motte-Servolex in the Arrondissement of Chambéry .

geography

La Motte-Servolex is located at 264  m , about 5 km northwest of the city of Chambéry (as the crow flies). The city extends in the north-west of the Savoie department, in the Alpine foothills south of Lac du Bourget , in the wide valley of Chambéry, at the eastern foot of the Chaîne de l'Épine .

The area of the 29.85 km² municipality covers a section in the Chambéry region. The eastern part of the municipality is occupied by the wide valley furrow of Chambéry, which connects the Lac du Bourget and the Grésivaudan . In the area of La Motte-Servolex, the depression has a flat valley floor about 2 km wide, which is drained by the Leysse to the north to Lac du Bourget. The formerly marshy valley floor is now largely drained. The community area extends westward from the valley level over the slowly rising slope of La Motte, which is subdivided by the valleys of various side streams of the Leysse. This is followed by the densely forested steep slope of the Chaîne de l'Épine. The western border runs on the wide ridge of the Montagne de l'Épine ( 1040  m ), which rises north of the Col de l'Épine pass ( 987  m ) to the ridge of the Mont du Chat . On the Château Richard , the southern end of the Mont du Chat, the highest point of La Motte-Servolex is reached at 1,441  m .

La Motte-Servolex consists of the two main settlements La Motte and Servolex on the western edge of the Chambéry valley basin as well as numerous hamlet settlements, including:

  • Villard-Marin ( 430  m ) at the foot of the Chaîne de l'Épine
  • Ronjoux ( 360  m ) at the foot of the Chaîne de l'Épine
  • La Villette ( 340  m ) on the slope above La Motte
  • Villard-Péron ( 490  m ) at the foot of the Chaîne de l'Épine
  • Montaugier ( 470  m ) at the foot of the Chaîne de l'Épine
  • Le Villard ( 400  m ) on the slope above La Motte
  • Le Noiray ( 360  m ) in a valley at the foot of Mont du Chat
  • Barbiset ( 460  m ) on a terrace at the foot of Mont du Chat
  • Beauvoir ( 270  m ) on the western edge of the Chambéry valley
  • Le Tremblay ( 290  m ) on the slope west of the Chambéry valley plain

history

La Motte-Servolex, parish church

Servolex first appeared in the documents around 1100 under the name Servolay , later under Cervollay and other identical spellings. At around the same time, in 1108, La Motte was first mentioned as La Mota . This place name is derived from the old French word mothe , which means a fortified hill. In the Middle Ages, both villages were independent parishes owned by the Montfort domain, which is why La Motte was also called La Motte-Montfort for a long time . On the hill of La Motte there was also a priory of the Augustinian Canons with the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste de La Motte . This was subordinate to the cathedral chapter of Belley , with which the priory was united in 1274. In 1925 it was canceled. The Saint-Etienne church of Servolex, on the other hand, depended on the Saint-Chef abbey at Bourgoin-Jallieu via the diocese of Belley .

In 1794, the two previously independent communities merged to form the new double community La Motte-Servolex, although the current name was not officially introduced until 1807. At the beginning of the 1990s, the center of La Motte was redesigned.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in La Motte originally dates back to a Gothic structure, but was redesigned in the early 19th century. There is a neo-Gothic church in Le Tremblay , which was built between 1854 and 1857. There are several castles and mansions in the municipality. Worth mentioning are the Castle of Ronjoux, the Castle of Pingon (built in 1515) and the Château Reinach, built at the end of the 18th century and modified in the 19th century. It stands in a large park and now houses (together with new buildings) the Lycée Agricole (an agricultural vocational school). The old Hôtel de ville (town hall) was built from 1855 to 1858. As part of the redesign of the town center, a modern building with a tower and glass facade was added in 1992.

With 11,826 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), La Motte-Servolex is one of the largest municipalities in the Savoie department. After the population had risen slowly but continuously in the first half of the 20th century, a marked increase in population has been recorded since the middle of the century. Since then, the number of inhabitants has increased almost fivefold. Particularly high growth rates were registered during the 1970s. Today La Motte-Servolex is the most populous suburb of Chambéry. It has grown together seamlessly with the neighboring communities of Chambéry and Cognin.

Economy and Infrastructure

La Motte-Servolex was an agricultural village well into the 20th century. Fruit growing and viticulture still play a certain role today. It was not until around 1950 that it began to develop rapidly into a residential suburb of Chambéry. Since then, a large industrial and commercial zone has developed in the valley in the Erier-Bissy area on the outskirts of Chambéry, in which a total of around 450 companies from various sectors have settled. The important industries include the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, mechanical industry and food processing. There are also numerous other small to medium-sized companies, service companies, shops and trading companies.

The village is very well developed in terms of traffic. La Motte-Servolex is located on the D14 departmental road from Chambéry to Le Bourget-du-Lac. Further regional road connections exist with Saint-Sulpice and the Col de l'Épine. The closest connection to the A41 and A43 motorways , which cross the municipality, is around 3 km away. La Motte-Servolex is connected to Chambéry by several bus routes. This also makes it easy to reach Chambéry main station on the railway line from Annecy to Grenoble .

Parish partnership

The partner municipality has been Mundelsheim in Baden-Württemberg since 1974 .
